HATAITAI ELECTORS
MEETING OF THE ASSOCIATION. The annual mooting of the Hataitai Municipal Electors' Association was held in the Bowling Club's pavilion last evening, Mr. A. Leigh Hunt presiding. The annual report and the statement of receipts and expenditure were adopted. The report stated that during the year the- committee had done what it could to assist in recruiting, and noted witli pride tho number of fine young men who havo left Hataitai to jom'tho 'colours. A roll of honour is suggested to ho erected in a prominent position m Hataitai, to record tho names of those who liavo voluntarily gone from Hataitai to fight for King and country. : In regard to the school, the continued efforts of tho association extended over tho past few years are at last mooting, with success. The side-school, which was opened last year, proved inadequate, and a new building of three rooms is in process of. erection on the ground purchased by the . Education Board. It is expected that the school will ue ready for occupation early ■in July. The new school will be attached to the Itoscneath school district, the boundary of which has recently been extended. .A volunteer Fire Brigade of twelve residents was formed during the year, and a fire station, with appliances, was elected in Upper Hataitai, Road. The report also mentioned that treeplanting had been carried out in erent localities; and that the City Council had been approached on various matters relating to the district. "The-, association (continued .the report) acknowledges the courtesy of-the Mayor (Mr. J. P. Luke) and councillors in connection with tho work of the past yea:', and although wo have not been able to convince the authorities upon some points, yet they should realise our requests are- based upon local knowledge, combined with a desire to serve and advance-tho city as a whole. Tho work, of the City Engineer's Mepartment in connection with the roads, footpaths, and channelling in Hataitai is distinctly creditable, and is a matter of favourable comment: After repeated efforts, your committee havo at fast been successful in obtaining seats from the City Council, who have placed them on tho Hataitai Bay beach by tho Bathing Club's premises. Though supplied lato in tho season, the seats are none tho less welcome, and will be greatly appreciated by- residents. An effort is now Jjpiug made to have seats place"d. near tno reservoir,- where a beautiful view can be obtained."
Mr. William C. liobinson moved: " r J.'his:meeting-of ratepayers of Haitaitai emphatically protests against tho pre-' sent.overcrowding prevailing in connection with tho trams, and calls upon the City Council to provide an adequate service, as owing to the tunnel being the only means of access ,to tho district the residents are entirely dependent; on the trams.'-, Mr. Kobinson gave some instances of tho inconvenience and inthe present Hataitai tram service, emphasising especially the overcrowding at certain hours. Tho i'rosidont stioiigly . condemned the present tram arrangements, which' resulted, in such overcrowding of tho ears passing through Hataitai. It was not right to attribute tho overcrowding -to the war. The evil "existed, long before tho war 'started.
Messrs. G. Halliday; H. D. Edwards, G. W. Dowling, and. .W. J. Gaudin endorsed tlie president's statements. Councillor M'lvonzio said' tho City Council was hampered . at present through lack of rolling-stock, owing to the present war. sTho tramway management was taxed to its utmost"to provide for tho'requirements of the travelling public, ''especially, during "rush hours." The problom was a diilicnlt one, but he .thought that representations niae'lo to Mr.-Morton, tramway manager, would probably result in some improvement being effected. The motion wn s carried unanimously. Bight new members were cleoted to tho association.
