'•' A sensational incident occurred this morning at the Maori settlement on an island known as Awamarohi, in the Waikato Itiver, and as a result a Maori woman has been arrcstod on a charge of''attempting' to' murder a Maori, named. Enoka. -
The woman and, Enoka were "two of the inhabitants' of-the settlement, and lived-with a-numbervof, other Maoris in a whare. . According to the/Natives, the woman became jealous. At daybreak she left the whare and proceeded to another dwelling, where she" obtained a shotgun. Upon her return. Enoka was still lying on. rugs on the floor of the whare, and .without warning she fired at him point blank. The rugs afforded some protection . against the pellets, but some pierced the covering and passed.right through his left thigh, caused a gaping wound, and : other wounds wore inflicted on the lower part of the body. . .'.' •'■."'■
; Dr. ..Wake proceeded to the island to attend the wounded man, and he found he was being treated by Natives according to their own ideas of medicine. In spito of all. arguments tho injured man refused to a'low himself to bo removed for treatment at Auckland Hospital, declaring he was certain he would die if lip entered a. hospital. .
