AN ANZAC ARMY MOOTED
WITH GENERAL BIRDWOOD IN COMMAND: By Telegraph—Press Association-Copyright (Rec. May' 3, 1.5 a.m.) London, May 2. The Australian and New Zealand Staffs strongly favour Sir W. R. Birdwood commanding all the Australians and New Zealanders, thus forming an Anzac army, composed of two army corps. This appointment would powerfully encourage Australian recruiting, and also would be popular with the entire troops, owing to Birdwood's remarkable hold on the Anzacs. If General Birdwood were promoted, General Godley would take up the command of the first Anzac Army Corps, an Imperial officer who fought with the Australians probably succeeding General Godley. These arrangements would stimulate Australian sentiment. ' _ Representations are being made to the War OiHco in this connection.
