Mr. Lynden Macassey, K.C., who has just been appointed by Mr. Lloyd Georga as chairman of two new Labour Committees in connection with . the Munitions Department, is ono of the greatest authorities on railways in the Ulritsil Kingdom. He is acknowledged t-j be an expert on railway rates, and has a large practice before the British Railway Commission. He is married to an Australian lady. Mr 0. S.- Parker, son of Mr. W. J. ■Parker,'; o£ ;Remuera, arid Mr. W. Spinks, Bon of Mr. R. B. Spinks, of Ponsonby, are leaving Wellington for London to join the Royal Flying Corps. Mr. E. C. Hazlett has been elected chairman of the Otago Harbour Board. In talcing the chair, Mr. Hazlett intimated that as the board was reducing its expenditure in many directions this year, he would not accept the usual honorarium of £200 allowed b.y Act to th? chairman.
! Mr. and Mrs. Charles Hiorns returned to Wanganui from 'Wellington yesterday morning. A Press Association telegram from Hokitika records the death of Mr. James Chesney, formerly a well-known merchant, aged seventy-seven years. Mr. Vincent Pyke, of Gisborne, is a visitor to Wellington. Mr. Pyke was manager of the Gisborne branch of the Bank of New Zealand for many years. Superintendent Warner, of Christchurcn Fire Brigade, is spending his annual vacation this year in Auckland. , ■ Tho election of a director of the Auckland Farmers' _ Freezing Company to represent the dairy factory companies in the province which have taken up shares in the undertaking • has been completed. Mr. H. F. Pacey, of Auckland, was returned, polling 9851. votes, as against 2630 recorded in favour of Mr. J. M'Leod, of Helensville. Mounted, Constable John Pearson, who joined the N.Z. Police Force four years ago, resigned from'the service yesterday, and goes into camp to-day 'with tho N.C.O.'s for the' 18th Reinforcements. He .has had previous service .with the. First Life guards and tho Royal Irish Constabulary. He was metj last evening at Lambton Quay Police Station -by a large gathering of his comrades, and presented with a gold albert and pendant. Sergeant Gallney, who made the presentation, referred to the high esteem in which Constable Pearson was held by mombers of the force, and wished him God speed. Several others added their tribute, and Constable Pearson suitably replied.
