NOTES AND COMMENTS
— . I [BY fjLEjrcoz.l , Acceptances for the Hawke's Bay Jockey Club's Autumn Meeting close at 9 o'clock to-night. .The gathering will be held on Friday and Saturday of this week. Several attempts have been made to school Ormesby lately, but the Birkenhead gelding consistently refuses to jump. His projected trip to Hastings has been abandoned. Now that the Auckland flat season has closed B. Deeley iutends to be present at as many meetings as possible in the south, and so try to reduce the lead which J. O'Shea has got on him. Deeley is passing through Wellington to-day on his way to tlie Ashburton meeting. B. Price, who won a steeplechase at Eandwick on Plash. Jack, lias enlisted, and goes into camp on his return from Sydney. Another New Zealander, in P. M'Catw, is already in camp, but J. N. M'Gregor was discharged a3 unfit a few weeks ago. The last-named item is not surprising, for a man who has had one hundred odd falls and numerous breakages, could hnrdly stand the wear and .teqr of war. The Auckland-owned Colonel Soult is stated to be an unlikely starter in the Hawke's Bay Cup. . It is not the yearling that co3ts most money that proves the best racehorse. At the Eandwick 1912 sales the highest-priced youngster was the Maltster—Lady Trenton colt, which brought IGOOgns. He is now a 5-year-old and it was only the other day that he won his first race, which "vas a AVelter worth ,£BO. A yearling colt by the American sire, St. Savin, from .Lady Medallist, has recently joined T-. I l '. Scully's , Eandwick team. The youngster is owned by Mr. E. J. Cronen, who won the Caulfield Cup with Lady Medallist. A London paper says that a rather comical incident occurred in connection with the Bowlands Maiden Steeplechase at Liugfield. At the first fence Abdul came down, and dispensed with his jockey, and, going on riderless, came into collision with a photographic apparatus, over which he turned , a .somersault. The performance appeared to astonish him, and, getting up, he stood and gazed at the wreck he had made for fully a minute before cantering away to the. paddock gate. Kaskayne has been entered for the Great Northern Hurdles. Ho and Pursofiller are the only maidens in the race. The "Thoroughbred Record" .'Lexington, Ky.) tells a story about Mr. H. P. Wnitimy and the Kentucky Derby of last year, which was won by his good filly llegret. Mr. 'Whitney, who was present' when hifi filly won,' was given a cheque for the stakes after the race of the value, or 11,150 dollars (roughly J32290). Officials of the South Louisville Bank (Ky.) waited ill vain for the cheque to be cashed, and at the end of last month the bank president wrote to Mt. "Whitncw advising him that the money was awaiting his wishes and asking why the cheque had not come through. Mr. Whitney replied, saying that he supposed the cheque hud been lost, and asked for. the original draft to be stopped and a duplicate forwarded to liini. "This was done," adds the "Kecord." It pays to be a good jockey these days. For winning the Easter Handicap on Chortle at Ellerslie, S. Eeid received over £100. Three has been left in the South Australian Jockey Club's St. Leger, to be run on Saturday next, but the Welkin colt is not likely to be sent to Adelaide. Eeferring to Imputation going wrong after winning the Autumn Plate, a Sydney writer says that lie has not actually broken down, but a long spell will be necessary for him. So far it is not known whether Desert Gold is to fulfil her engagement in the Hawke's Bay ■ Stakes, but the probabilities are that the Hying tilly win be allowed to take her place in the field on Saturday. Last year sho won with 181b.. penalty and she will again have to shouldei the same penalty this year, but if-, she can put it up as a two-year-old she should be bettor able to carry the weight when a year older. A Press Association telegram from Hastings states that Sir Geo. Clifford has scratched all his : horses for all engagements at the Hawke's Bay Autumn Meeting
