KARORI WATER AND DRAINAGE LOAN.
Sir, —Tho desperato apologies and ex* cuscs made for tlio Karori Water and Drainage Loan are a clear evidence of the weakness of the proposal. They; urgo the sanitation as a necessity, yet' thoy bait tho expensive scheme with a' declaration that the work will not be put in hand for a long time to come— a wonderful somersault. Mr. Luke now follows in similar strain. Will he tell us liow any part of tho water and drainago system can be held over as not "urgent" without depriving the taxburdened resident of the service? Further, in their circular, signed by at least three non-ratepayers, Iliey state that houses could be connected with tho system for £23. This ridiculous esti« mate is another bait to catch the voter. If lie bites he will be ''landed" to the extent of £40 or £50. We challenge the signers of tlio apologetic circular to get any firm to bind itself to connect any of the dwellings of average accessibility, according to the average approved specification, for £23 each. It is sig» nificant that even these ingenious, bull not ingenuous, apologists, cannot present an apology for the proposal to paj[ a. syndicate for unused drains put in at their own option. If the sanitation is urgent, why propose to delay it? Ir the cost is reasonable, why pretend it will not all have to.be paid? If we carried the loan, who would be pledged for the, fair promises now made, includ* ing connections at £23, and a promise of half rates? . We, have heard all this before over other loans, but when the promises vanished into thin' air after the full pressure of loan rates, was felt, where were the promisers?—l am, WIDEAWAKE.
