ARMED ASSAULTS ON CHINESE. ANOTHER FATALITY. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright Sydney, April 29. One of the Chinese who were shot by a masked robber at Auburn on April 21 has succumbed. [A masked man walked to an open window of a house at Auburn, occupied by four Chinese. Without warning, he shot a' Chinese with a revolver. Then he entered the house and shot another, who had . been attracted by the shot;'and. walked into an adjoining room and shot a third Chinese. Ho locked the fourth in a bedroom. After ransacking the victims' pockets, ho departed, leaving no clue. Two of tho Chinese were seriously wounded.]
SERIOUS SHORTACE OF STEEL. REQUEST FOR PERMISSION TO ; import; Melbourne, April 29, The iron trades sent a deputation to Senator. Gardiner, pointing out the grave situation owing to the shortage of steel, and asked permission t-o import material. The deputation suggested that the Govornmont should establish works in Melbourne:- Senator Gardiner promised that tho Cabinet would give tho proposal consideration. STRIKE AT NAVAL WORKSHOPS. (Rec. April 30,. 5.5 p.m.) Sydney, April 29. In connection with the strike of engineers at the naval workshops at Garden Island, as the result of the dismissal of a member of the union for refusing to do certain work, it is stated that tho men have requested to be allowed to. return to work to-morrow, pending an agreement with the unions concerned.
