The death occurred yesterday, at his residence, 9 Patanga Crescent, of a greatly .esteemed colonist, in the person of Mr. William Lewis, aged 78 years. Deceased, who was bora in North Wales, was apprenticed, to tho drapery business, and at the' : age of twenty-one proceeded to London, where lie' was connected with the wholesale trade for many years. In 1879 lie left with. his wife and family for New Zealand in the sailing ship Maraval. After living in Wanganui for five years, he settled in tho Forty-Mile Bush, and was in business there until twelve years ago, .when he came to Wellington, and had, resided- here since. The late Mr. Lewis's first and fifth sons were killed on August . 9 last at Gallipoli. ' He leaves a widow and .four sons and four daughters—Messrs. Percy Lewis (ICimbolton), Edward (Wellington), Lieut. S. E. (in camp with tho 136h Reinforcements), and Llewellyn (Wellington); Mrs. J. Mercer (Rotorua), Mrs. J. H. . Harris (Redclift's, Taradale), Miss Lewis (Wellington), and Miss Ethelwyn Lewis (Wanganui). Mr: and Mrs. Lewis, celebrated their golden wedding last year.

The funeral of tlie late Mr. Henry James' Chapman, who died as ,the result of a railway accident near Petonc, took place yesterday afternoon, four of deceased's fellow-workers acting as pallbearers. The Rev. Wilson, of Khandallali, officiated at the graveside. The chief mourners were Messrs. T. J. Chapman, accountant at the Bristol Piano Co.; C. E. G. Chapman, of the Royal New Zealand Artillery, Auckland; and S. Chapman, Wellington, all brothers of the deceased. A few months ago deceased enlisted in the Expeditionary Force? and after having been, in training at ( Trentliam for a fortnight, was discharged on account of having trouble with his left foot. Strange to say, this was the foot which was crushed in the accident and subsequently amputated. His only other brother, Signaller R. R. Chapman, D.C.M. (13th Battalion Australian Imperial Force), is at present in England recovering from wounds received at Gallipoli in August last.
