POULTRY INDUSTRY
(By Chantecler.) The Poultry Conference, Tho Poultry Conference held in Wellington during the week was a pronounced utiecess. 'i'hu ntteudauco was remarkably good, sixty delegates being present at the opening session. Sgcielies wore represented from Auckland to Dunedin, There is no doubt the New Zealand Poultry Association has obtained a very strung hold, and has before it a future of usefulness to the poultry industry generally. Tho social* functions arranged by the conference committeo were much enjoyed.. Tho sessions opened on Easter Saturday. Tho president had scarcoly finished congratulating tho delegates and extending them a welcome to Wellington when it was announced that 22,000 dozen eggs had just arrived, and were being cleared at tho Customs unstamped, and contrary to the Act passed last session. Somo strong comments were made on the action of the Government in allowing the Customs to do this, but subsequent inquiries proved tho eggs to have' been placed on order before the aiueiidment of tho Puro Poods Act had been gazetted, consequently they counted as stock-in-trade, and had a right to pass the Customs unstamped. The Social Side. Every session of the conference passeu off pleasantly. There was an absence of bickering and uufriendly spirit. Diversity of opinion was frequently expressed, but there were no personal and unkind remarks, and 110 one went away nourishing the ill-effects of. unkind words. This spirit always permeates the conference, and poultrymen aro to be congratulated on the dignified and pleasant way in which, the conference is conducted. Tho visit to Trentham and the afternoon tea among the soldiers, the cheering pleasantry of the address given by Colonol Potter, were much appreciated. The annual dinner arranged by the Wellington poultrymen was much oujoyed, and did a great deal to familiarise the delegates one with another. The visits of the Mayor to the conference and representatives of the Depai'bnont of Agriculture did much to make the conference feel at homo. A subsequent Invitation to the delegates to attend the Town Hall memorial "service, when they found reserved 6eats waiting for them, was delightful forethought and recognition by the Mayor of Wellington, and fully appreciated by the conference when it was seen there were thousands shut out from the service for want of seating accommodation. Poultrymen have given their sons to the war in no small number, and it says much for the Mayor of Wellington that he was acquainted witli the fact, and gave it due recognition. The Old and the New, The retiring president (Mr. G. Finn) had during the year won favour in the eyes of poultrymen. When ho was elected it was thought that a producer should hold the positiou, but Mr. Finn, by his enthusiasm, his unselfish efforts on behalf of the industry, and his devoted work to the association had disarmed all criticism, and brought forth the admiration of all. In Mr. H. M. Boddington, Masterton, the association has a powerful leader. 'As secretary of tho Wairarapn Egg Circle he has been the mainstay in developing the circle and keeping producers togothor. He has spent no end of time in helping to get other districts organised, while his reports and annual balance-sheets have been one of the greatest contributors to the validity of the egg circle movement. ' In Mr. Boddington the association haß a president that will set a good pace, and we may look for some startling advancement under his direction. Legislation, The conference did good solid work along- many lines, especially in its efforts to request the Government for certain concessions. We shall refer to these matters at a later date. The Next Conference. The association has decided to hold its next conference in .Wellington. Christchurch lost the vote by 23 to 27. Being central, AA'ellington was considered the better city in which to have tho confer-, enco. N.Z. UTILITY POULTRY CLUB'S NEW COMPETITIONS, .
