CARTERTON NOTES

The Carterton Borough Council has appointed a committee to draw up a list of owners of dilapidated fences in the borough, with tho object of serving noticcs on them to erect fences in accordance with the Fencing Act. Tho many friends of Mrs. W. Wadham, of Carterton, will learn with regret that Bhe is at present an inmate of tho Masterton Hospital. A pickpocket was. apprehended at tho Tauherenikau races on {Saturday, after ho had relieved a visitor of some £8. His suspicious movements led to his arrest. Mr. J. A. AVhittakor, of Carterton, is at present lying seriously ill in a private hospital in Wellington. Mr. M., 0. West, the well-known cheesemaker, and manager of the Dalefield Factory for the past oloveu years, is resigning' his position on account of failing benltn.

The settlers of Parkvale tendered a farewell social on Wednesday evening to Mr, and Mrs. I\ W. Burling and Mr. R. M'Donald, who, after many years' residence in the locality, ore leaving for fresh fields. At a suitable interval in the proceedings, Mr. W. A. Eevall, on behalf of the settlers, presonted Mr. and Mrs. Burling with a marble clock and a silver cruet witli cut-glass set, and to Mr. M'Don. aid was given a gladstone bag and travelling rug. The gifts were suitably acknowledged. Owing, to so many of its members having left on active service, the ranks of the Carterton Brass Band have been so depleted that it has decided to disband, and' the instruments have all been called in. It is proposed to sell the instruments to the military authorities at Tauherenikau, and place tho money at interest until the time is opportune to reinstate the band.
