! "Still serious" is the latest official pronouncement upon'the situation in Ireland. Street fighting continues in Dublin, and the insurrection is said to bo spreading, especially in the west, but Mr. Asquith assured the House of Commons that adequate forces had been dispatched to deal with the_ situation. Both Sir Edward Carson and Mr. Redmond warmly denounced the uprising. Martial law has been proolaimed throughout all Ireland, and Sir John Maxwell, lately Com-mander-in-Chief in Egypt, is in command of the Government forces. Atfer a very brief appearance in the House of Commons, the new Compulsion Bill was withdrawn. Sir Edward Carson denounced it as unfair, illogical, and unreasonable, and threatened to divide the House /if it were proceeded with.. A Labour member's demand for genera] ; compulsion was cheered. New proposals are to be introduced by the Government forthwith. An outburst of fighting is reported on the British front in Northern France.. The Germans temporarily penetrated the line at some points, but were quickly ejected, and suffered heavy loss. No exceptional event is reported at Verdun, though the Germans are said to have issued a communique asserting that they will capture the place at all costs. The Italians have beaten off powerful Austrian attacks on the southern part of the Carso plateau, north of the Adriatic. The Germans claim to have sunk a British light cruisor and a submarine. The report regarding the submarine is repeated by the Press Bureau w ithouc comment. From Holland it is reported that a German submarine has" been sunk in tho North Sea by a.disguised British patrol boat. The situation as between Germany and the United States is still tense. A German plot has been exposed which aimed at inundating American Senators with tele- : grams, coming as from constituents, and protesting against the United States making war in any circumstances, *
