BURGLARY AT NAPIER

RESIDENCE RANSACKED.

By Telegra.ph.-(Speci<U Correspondent.) Napier, April 27. A most daring burglary was carried out at Napier on the afternoon of Anzao Day. Mr. Sam Wood's residence, May Avenue, Colenso Hill, was ransacked from end to end. ,

About 1.30 p.m. on the day in question, Mr. Wood, accompanied by the other mombers cf his family, left the house to attend the United Service in the Municipal Theatre, leaving, as thoy thought, everything ouite secure. On returning at about o.le p.m., however, they,,found the wire door, which had been bolted on tho inside,, wide opeir inside tho house all was confusion, the contents of drawers lay strewn all over tho rooms. Hardly a thing in tho house remained untouched, even a Masonic bag had been ripped open with a penknife.

From tho front room tho intruders had taken away a gold chain, a pendant set with pearls and amethysts, and a plain gold Dangle. The amount of property stolen is valued at over £15. Tho burglars were apparently actuated by singular desires, for three gold watches, 3 gold chains, four or five gold brooches, and a gold ring set with a, big opal were left lying about in another room, where everything had been disturbed. They left a diamond stud valued at about £40, and a diamond ring valued at.£lo, besides a silver watoh and chain. Cigarettes apparent" ! ly proved an irresistible attraction, for one tin of Three Castles was stolen, as well as a loose packet, while a box of cigars was removed from Mr. Wood's bedroom. The burglars were apparently armed with at least one .32 calibre revolver, ■for two cartridges were found on the ileor, one in each of two rooms. The intruders were evidently alarmed during the course of their operations, and cleared hurriedly, cthorwiso it is hardly probablo' that so many valuables would havo been left lying in all directions. The robbery was more daring by Tensor, of the fact that Mr. Wood's house is next door but one to- Police Inspector M'Grath's, and specially as ho was Working in the garden, at least some part of the time during which the houso was entered. This is tho second burglary that, has token placo in Napier during tho last few days. On the. pre. vious occasion a house, in Hyderabad Road was entered and a cold watch stolon.
