ANNUAL MEETINGS

LADIES' CHRISTIAN ASSOCIATION.

Tho annual meotings of the Ladies', Christian Association, the-JJevin Home, and' the Alexandra Home wero held in St. John's Schoolroom yesterday afternoon. The Rev. Mr. Glasson presided.

The annual report of the Ladies' Christian Association,_ presented by the president Mrs. Menzies, stated that a considerable amount of clothing has been disposed of during the year. As a matter of fact, however, there was much less distress met with during tho year just ended than had been the case in former years. There were still,. however, old pensioners who needed assistance in the Way o,f groceries, and firing.. Members had been-very, busy sewing' for tho soldiers, cither at their own' homes or else working at the Town Hall. The efforts of tho Boot Club were much appreciated. Mrs. Belworthy was still with the society, and her tact and sympathy were invaluable in the work done by the society. During the year 1245 yards of material had been bought and made up into garments, and given away, as follows : 25 pairs 72 towels, 30 shirts, 12 pairs of trousers, 78 pairs of . socks and stockings; materials given away included 21 pairs 'of sheets, 72 yards of dress material, 3 quilts, 29 pairs boys' pants,: 30 boys' shirts and singlets. 32 boys' overcoats, and a shirt; babies' garments', 194; women and girls' underwear garments, 192; girls' frocks, 73; stockings, socks, and bed socks, 86 pairs; men's shirts, 20; singlets. 16; men's drawers, 12 pairs; total or new garments, 617; -secondhand, 767. The Two Garment Society had sent 140 new and 90 second-hand garments, for which they were very grateful, . also 12 bottles of Kepler's Extract. The number of garments cut out and made at the Dorcas was 128. Save for the loss of Miss Hiscricks, who had retired from the secretaryship owing to pressure of other work, there was no change in the personnel of' the committee. They were ful to the Sixth Standard girls 'of the' Terrace School for several bundles of clothing, and to Mr. Macmorran for several overcoats. The balance-sheet also showed a satisfactory. state of the finances. LEVIN MEMORIAL HOME. The annual report of ,the Levin Home, • presented by Miss Greenwood, tho president, showed a satisfactory record, The health and well-being of tho children had been very good, and a warm tribute to the matron, Miss Jolly, for her admirable work in caring for and supervising their welfare was paid by Miss Greenwood. . In' July, the report stated, the children had been removed from tho Wellington South School to the new school at Berhampqro. The committee regretted the cessation of .the children's intercourse with Mr. Flux, the headmaster, and gratefully acknowledged his unfailing interest and unvarying kindness m their welfare. Thanks were duo to Mr. and Mrs. J. Duncan for a gift of £25, to ■ the Trustees of the Macarthy Trust for £50; donations for gift tea-, £39 Is. 7d.; 7001b.. of groceries; 75 yards, of dress materials; 125 articles from the TwoGarment Society: the pupils of' the Fitzherberfc School for clothing for one child; "A Friend," for clothing for another child; Mr. Larmour for frequent generous supplies of firing; wood; Hur- ■ comb, and Son, for fish dinners almost every week; to the ladies who organised the gift'tea and contributed to it;,and to Mr. Hoby and Dr. Kemp for professional attendance. The personnel of the committee is as follows:—President, Miss E. S.. Greenwood; vice-president, ' Mrs. J. P. Luke; hon. secretary, Miss Archibald; lion, treasurer, Miss Ida Morrah; committee, Mesdames A. Anderson, Flux, M. Hall, Hobday, Hoby, Iwird, West Knnwles, West, Misses Barry, Young, and Fowler. ALEXANDRA'HOME. , Very satisfactory also was the report of the work carried out at the Alexandra Home, presented by the president, Miss E. S. Greenwood. The health and general behaviour of the inmates was very good, and tho matron, Miss Stewart, had spoken of the friendliness and good feeling that existed among them. She was very grateful; for. the services rendered by the medical staff of the Public Hospital, always promptly and kindly given whenever there were serious cases to be dealt with; also to the Hospital and Charitable Aid Board for their liberal supply of medicines aiid antiseptics; to Miss Inglis, matron of St. Helen's, for the kindnessand help that had been given to the nurses' during her (Miss Stewart's) absence on sick leave. She also wishes to acknowledge the good work done by Nurses Curtis and Suisted during that time. In district cases, the report went on to state, the patient i 6 attended at confinement and for ten days afterwards by a nurse, a fee of £1 being 1 charged; if friends, however, undertake to nurse the patieut, a fee of 10s. is charged. Extra nursing and attendance can be given if necessary by arrangement. Nurses in training attend lectures given to the nurses at St. Helen's, each paying a fee of ten guineas. The committee was grateful for gifts of vegetables, clothing old linen, etc.; -to tho Two-Garment Society for gifts of clothing for mothers and children, and to all who assisted with tho sale of work held in August. Very gratefully they also acknowledged the very fine work of Miss Stewart, to whom was due the satisfactory state of affairs at the home.

The statistics for the year just ended were as follow: —Admitted to the home, 20 married women and 35 single women ; ■ discharged, 19 married and 34 singlo women; births, male 30, female 20 "' death (stillborn), 1; marriages in! the home, 3 just after leaving, 5; I mothers married to fathers of infants, 6; mothers taking their children with them to their ■ parents' homes, 7; mothers taking their infants with them to situations, 4; infants committed to the State, 6; infants boarded in licensed jiomes, 3; adopted, 3. The balance-sheet showed receipts amounting to £1017 16s. id., of which some of the items were": Subscriptions and donations; £137 -13s. 6d.; legacy of the late Mr. Sydney Diamond, £200; Government subsidy, £279 . Os. 2d.; maintenance, £209 4s. 6d. The expenditure amounted to £968 17s. 3d., leaving a credit of £4S 19s. Id., which, added to the balance of £1178 2s. Bd., brought forward from the previous vear, made the balance in hand on March 31 last, £1227 Is. 9d. Of the expenditure £276 had been expended onpainting and repairs. At the same time, something was done to provide more com fort, for the inmates and staff, so that the item "furnishing and household requisites" involved an expenditure of £148, which included a completely new outfit of beds, mattresses, etc. .The committee consists of the following:— President, Miss Greenwood; vice-presi-dent, Mrs. Morrah; hou. secretary, Mrs. H.
