J'he latter had put in a wonderful inn,-'from the turn, wnere she vvas second to last. : The Denbigh Stakes saw Astor triumpti after- a great Tace. Ring.- Li'ipin was showing clear of Coropet and Znterludo after a furlong had been covered. At the bend Astor got through, on the. rails, and was in charge a furlong from home, ' when , Master ' Achilles oliallenged, but, ridden out, Astor won by half a length, with Coropet, who"got a bad run, third, _ and Eing Lupin next. , Tararu Jack was withdrawn, r rrom the Kimbolton Hurdles, in which several/ of the r ; unners were heavily backed. Aruako and Queen's Pb3t were, in the van for a mile, when Naupata became prominent in front, and attended by Queen's Post he. led pv.er the last fence. Here Glenorchy canie fast,' but in a. ding-dong finish the top-weight'won by a head. • Queen's Post was close up, and then "came Aruake, who had 'carried "wide out' at the -home, bend., Parewanui and Captain Mackay were, the, next to finish. Harbour Light fell, at the first fence, but his rider escapetl with a" 6hakirig. The stewards questioned H., M'Sweeney, rider of the winner, > but his explanation was satisfactory.'..-,,' ''-Scrutineer was at a short price in the Hack Hurdles, but though, he ran a go'od, race, he was. comfortably defeated at the' finish by ; Lord Nelson, who was a better horse for his first day's race... ,Golden March, who was -third, is a half-brother to The Native, and for a maiden he made a. distinctly creditable showing. . Florist fell ■at the .second, fence. Simple Sain and'Koyal Simon both ran fair races. _ The heaviest speculation of the meeting took place in the Easter Handicap, over £4000 being, rung up, which is a record for the course. Square Deal and Uewi Poto were evenly backed, and then came Lady Louisa and Master Lupin. Square Deal drew the outside, and after . an excellent start he was still in that position passing the stand going out of the straight. Ineuru, led Byron and -ji-ith the others bunched. Round' ■ the bard Square Deal arid Orleans moved ' up, but the latter 'got sent back. Eewi Poto became prominent . entering tho -.straight, and' in a good finish he lasted long enough to beat'-'-Orle'aris,- who eame fast', on- the . fence, by a neck. ,Mastor Lupin wws a length. away, and then came iWant, Square ,Deal, and-Ineuru. Orleans and Lady Louisa *wero unlucky in running. Though badly Beaten on the opening day Bairnsdale was again favourite in the Rewa Hack Handicap, but he did no better, and finished well back. Tango was second favourite, arid from No. 1 •position she began smartly, but Eoyal Chef soon headed her off, and led into the straight, where Moutoa Queeu displaced him. . Tiora was well up on the outside, but in tho finish the Fordcli mare won by a length, with. Tango a. neck in. front of Royal Chef. Tiora, Coropet, and Sir Wallace were tho next, to finish. Namur lost her rider at the half-mile, and G. Thorner. had his leg broken. A big field went out for tho v Maiden Stakes, and a rank outsider in Camp Kettle, trained on the course, won by a neck from Pergola, with Battle Tide third, followed by Merry Andrew and Haupai. The last named was a hot order, but he got a bad run on the bend, and was stopped again in the straight. Tho bracketed pair, .Merry Andrew and Birkenetta, led into the straight, but both tired badly in the run homo. Byron and Black Ada, New York, and Kaniki wer6 the withdrawals from tho Makino Welter Handicap, leaving fifteen \ Princess Moutoa and Paroa jnbhopolised the attentions of backers, but the winner turned up .in the consistent Martial Air, who won handily.
