DESPERATE ATTACK ON MORT HOMME
COMPLETELY CHECKED BY THE FRENCH FUTILE ATTACK ON AVOCOURT REDOUBT The High Commissioner reports:— 1 London, April 25, 4.10 p.m. "West,of the/Meusc yesterday evening,- after a violent •bombardment, the Germans attacked several points in the Allies' new positions at Mort Homme. _ The first two attempts were completely chocked. The last attack, accompanied by intense eniployment of liquid fire, was stopped by our artillery curtain and infantry* firo, and the Germans were compelled to return'to their lines, suffering important losses; "There is intense artillery activity,in the region of Avocourt. During the night the enemy attempted without result to take our advanced post at Avocourt Redoubt. ..' . "East of the Meuse there is rather, a lively bombardment of our first and second lines. • "In the Forest of Apremont there has been grenade fighting. ' "In Lorraine we dispersed a strong enemy reconnaissance which attempted to entorone of our posts. , , "This morning, a German aeroplane dropped six bombs on Dunkirk; one woman was killed and three men injured. The material damage done was insignificant." • • , ■ . London, April 26, 3.55 a.m. A French official report states:. "North of Aisne, after artillery preparation, we carried a small wood in the region of La Ville-nux-Bois. "In the Argonno our heavy artillery destroyed a German post and fifty yams of the enemy's trenches'. . "The Germans exploded a mine at Hill 285; our curtain of fire prevented them from occupying the crater. . , "West of the Mouse there was an intense bombardment at Hilt 304. _ "In the Woeuvre district, thero was a violent bombardment in the Moulamville region. One of our long-range guns efficaciously bombarded Hendecourt station. "In Lorraine, south-east of Badon villers, the Germans, after intense bombardment, strongly attacked our salient at Chapclotte, and were completely repulsed.-, We took 15 prisoners." I
