FOUNDATION STONE LAID

Napier, April 25. The foundation stone of the new, building for the Napier Soldiers' Club was laid to-day by the Mayor, Mr. J. V.' Brown, M.P., who was presented with a silver trowel with which to perform the ceremony, and afterwards to kecp as„a memento.

Mrs. Arthur Mead, who came back to Christchurch a short timo ago, after a couple of years' vocal study in London, Paris, and New York, has been seriously ill for the past two' or three weeks. Mrs. Mead had a most strenuous time throughout the war, having, in addition to her study, to run the gauntlet of Zeppelins and submarines respectively. In New.York she one of the most'trying summers that even that notorious city of climatic extremes could record, and this, combined with the previous nervous strain and her hard work, resulted in a physical breakdown, from which she is, happily, .now making steady progress towards recovery. There are now 150 branches working in connection with the Red Cross Central Depot in Christchurch, and the number of working members is, as far as . can be ascertained, 5000, exclusive of members working for the Free Depot; The usual weekly gas cooking demonstration given by' Miss Ua Carter at the Wellington Gas Company's rooms on-Wednesday afternoons will not be held' this week. . • , Recently in Egypt the Maoris gave a farewell; concert to their. Australian friends, who, under the new reorganisation of the forces, are beinjj separated from the-New Zealand Division. The concert was also' to commemorate tho anniversary of the departure .of the New ealand Contingent from New Zealand. The Maoris were in fine form, and put on a really good entertainment, which took the fornwof a pa concert, at which the Maoris were entertaining honoured guests. Dr. Buck and the Rev. Mr. Wepiha were in good, form,' and the concert was a huge success, the hakas being greatly appreciated by the Australian and New Zealand troops who were present.
