FEILDING MEETING
CUP WON BY ORLEANS,
By Telegraph.—(Special Correspondent.) Feilding, April 24.
The first day of the Feilding Meeting opened to-day. The track was heavy, but there was a large attendance. .'The totalisator handled ,£26,848, as against ■£29,012 foT tho corresponding meetinj last year. : In the Waiata Stakes, Goldbearing wa< the first to break the line, but was imme< diately steadied, and Merry'Andrew'and Warmaid led to the turn, where Goldbearing and Detroit cams through, and in the finish the former beat tho favourite by a couple of lengths. Merry Andrew was. followed by ' Pergola, Uaupai, and Camp Kettle. ' • Astor, Ilushabye, Interlude, and Tirana were backed in that order for the Ma-' ngaone Stakes. The favourite ran a good race, but tho weight told ,and after catching Interlude half a furlong from home, the latter finished on the best and beat him home by a length. Tirana was-a fair third, and then came Square Deal, who was running on, and should do better nest time out. Hushabye got a bad ru.n, and was stopped twice on the journey.-' Heavy speculation took place in the Cup, for which Leonta was the best backed, followed by Master Lupin, Sir Solo, and liewi Poto. At the start Orleans took charge and led throughout, but.at no tima did he have a break on the field. Going out of tho straight his nearest attendants were. Byron and Harbour. Light, with Want and Sir Solo nest, and Leonta andMaster Lupin whipping: the field. Down the bach, Harbour Light lest his rider. Orleans was first iDto the straight, and despite a" strong challenge by he won all out by a neck, with Sir Solo half a length away. Leonta, Master Lupin, and Rcwi Poto were tho next to finish. J. Cat lire, rider of Harbour Light, sustained concussion, and was taken to th»' Hospital.
Tararu Jack was the favourite in the Kawa Ivawa Hurdles, and «fter being in a handy position till seven furlongs from home, his rider then rushed him to the front, and ho won anyhow from Queen'i Post, who was always prominent, aiuj Master Strowan, who came from a lon( •way back. Nnupata finished fourth. Mar. ton was prominent for over a circuit, whei he fell back. Parawanui covered a lot 01 ground, and was done with a long way from home. The Wiiiiganui pair, Aruake and Yladian, both stripped well, but ran badly. . The running in the Hack Hurdles was well sized up by the investing public, who made four figure equal favourites of Scrutineer and Austin, and the pair had the finish to themselves in the order named, with only a nose between them. Lord Nelson was well back,. third, and then came Royal Simon and Simple Sam. Austin and the last-named faado the early running from Scrutineer, bat at the lialtmilc M'Sweenoy took the Mahaki gelding up to Austin, and Simple Sam fell back. Tho two favourites took off at the last fence together, but Scrutineer made the best jump, and after a ding-dong finish he won by a short head with Lord Nelson three lengths back. Melodist fell at the first fence and broke his leg. All started in the Hack Welter Handicap. which resulted in a great finish between tho favourite, Black Ada, Ladify, and Amity. At the start the favourite led from Amity and Florist, wit!i the others bunched. The positions were nnclianged down the back, but on the bend Battle Tide moved ud. and was in behind tho
leader as the straight was reached. Here Kukui and Ladit'y made forward moves, and in a great finish the Levin mare just failed, to reach Black Ada; while Amity, ,-who carried 71b. over-weight, was another •lead away. Kukui was fourth. Fbrthe Ongo Hack Handicap 'there were several well-bucked rumiors, but the Wel-lington-owned Bairnsdalo was the actual favourite, with Ring Lupin only a few tickets behind him. The last-named and /Royal Chef were showing out after a furlong had been- covered, with Bairnsdaleand iloutoa Queen jiext. At the turn Tango -showed up, ' and, finishing well, beat all but Mo uto a Queen. Royal Chef was a neck away, and then canicNamur, Ring Lupin stopped badly at the finish, /i'he concluding event attracted a big field,, and resulted in a surprise win for the. Top-weight, Lady, Louis*; who was well assisted by the sting being out o£' the ground. "The useful Princess Moutoa was placed second. The results are as under:— iWAIATA STAKES, of 120 sovs..
