Rosebud Carnival. The Patriotic Rosebud Carnival, organised in aid of tlio lactone Woiiudcd Soldiers' Fund, was held at the i'etono Hecreation Ground yostcrday. In consequenco of rough weatherj the attendance was moderate.- A procession, headed by the,i'etono Municiya! and tlio tlutt Boy Scoiits Bauds, and iho various "Kosebud" Queen candidates, each striving to win public favour, followed, their lriends straining every nerve to bring their owii particular "Rosebud" into promiuence. A number of young girls from Lower Hutt, dressed in Red (Jross uniforms, created considerable in- 1 terest, •as did several decorated cars from the neighbouring suburb. The walking ovent of Mr. H. S. Alpe was a feature of the. day. Mr. Alpe left the (J.P.0., Wellington, at about 10.15 a.m., and arrived at Petone at 11.30. The tune thus occupied for the oiglit miles, was 7'imin. 12sec., which is 2j minutes less than his previous record for the distance". Mr. Alpe was nccompaiiied by the Wellington Patriotic Band on his journey, and was paced from Kaiwarra by Mr. P; J. Fitzgerald. Mr. J. II Ornirod was timekeeper, and Mr. J. Lewis referee. Throughout the day children's sports wem held, and the various side-shows were well patronised. The "Rosebuds" drill, under, the direction of Mr. J. Donkin, was highly appreciated. For the first time' a ladies' nursing event (stretcher drill), under the auspices of the St. John Ambulance Brigade, was decided. The winning team was Wellington 1 South (A), composed of: Mrs. Gaby and Misses Wells, Hustwick and Eggers, 89 points. Other results were: Petone Central (C), Mrs. Galvin, and Misses Cochrane, Lee, and Turner, 87 points, 2; Wellington South (B), 86 points, 3: Petone Central (B), 84 points; Petone Central (A), 75 points. Dr. "Ross acted as judge, Superintendent Cox as referee, - and Mr. J. Kyle as timekeeper. In : the absence of the Mayor of Petone (Mr. J. W. M'Ewan), Councillor Cox presented a. gold medal t'> the winning team, and congratulated tliem. on their display, and Mrs. Preston, superintendent of the Wellington South division, replied. .-The visiting competitors were entertained at afternoon tea by tlio local, committer.
