Compauy at Sydney, accompanied by his daughter, Miss Mills, arrived from Sydney' by the Moeraki yesterday afternoon. They are going through to Duneclin. Dr. Charles Chilton, of Christcliurch, lias been appointed a member of the Board of Governors of the New Zealand Institute, vice Mr. A. H. Turnbull, who has resigned. Mr. and Mrs. Lan Siimon, of Hawke's Bay and AVanganui, are visitors to Wellington. Mr. John Griffiths, who is to act as manager of the Paul Dufault concert tour, under the direction of Mr. Frederic Shipman, arrived from Sydney by the Moeraki yesterday. Mr. AA : alter Best, formerly manager of the photography business of AVrigglesworth and Binns, of "Wellington, and who Ims been located in Melbourne for some years, arrived ou a visit by the Moeraki yesterday. Mr. Lloyd "Williams, Orchard Instructor for the Poverty Bay district, is being transferred to a similar position in Marlborough and Nelson. Mr. AA 7 . P. Carter, of the Lambtou Railway passenger staff, who has been connected with the Railway service for the past seventeen years, has resigned to enter into business for. himself at Eketahuna. Mr. Carter was a highlyesteemed officer in the service, and prior to taking his departure on Thursday, a presentation of a purse of soveteigns was made on behalf of the staff by the stationmaster, Mr. A. AV. Hutchfngs, who t spoke very highly of Mr.' Carter's good qualities and abilities. Other members of the servico also spoke in praising terms, to which Mr. Carter suitably responded. Mrs. H. M. Saunders, of Miramar, was the successful applicant for the position of librarian at Dannevirke PubJic Library, out of thirty-nine ' candidates. Mr. D. B. Kennedy, secretary of the Furniture AVorkers' Union, left for AVanganui yesterday morning- to attend the annual conference of furniture workers of New Zealand. Mr. T. M. Alexander, solicitor, of Auckland, a prominent yachtsman, has enlisted. He was until recently the owner of the yaolifc lorarigi, built by Mr* R. Logan, sen., of Auckland, for Mr. A. H. Turnbull, of AVellington. The death is reported from AVanganui of Mr. John Howe, "in his 78th year.: The late Mr. Howe occupied tho position of mate and later master of several well-known coastal vessels, including the old St. Kilda and the Stormbird. A very .fine record in connection with the war-has been put up by the male sido of the family of the lute Mr. F. Hamilton, of Nelson (says the "Colonist")- Of nine sons, sis are single. Five of these are W active ser.vice, and the sixth has enlisted. Captain Archbald Hamilton, of an Indian regiment, went to Africa-at the outbreak of tha war, and has scon some severe In one engagement his regiment was badly cut up, and he was fortunate enough to get through -unscathed. Sur-gean-Coptam Alan Hamilton is now with; the British. Army "somewhere In France." .He was for a time on tha medical staff of the Duchess of Sutherland's hospital at Dunkirk, and afterwards enlisted in the R.A.M.C. Trooper. Hugh Hamilton left with the Main New Zealand Expeditionary Force, and and was wounded at Gallipoli. Developing lockjaw, he was invalided to England, where he made complete recovery. He then obtained a-transfer to tho Royal Flying Corps, ill which he was successful in obtaining a commission. Sergeant C. A. . Hamilton is with the New Zeaalad Artillery, and Private Reg. Hamilton is in camp with the New Zealand Medical Corns. Mr. R. A. Hamilton enlisted recently. The late Frank Hamilton was for many years in. business in Greymouth, and along with his family are well known.
