TAUHERENIKAU RACES _ ■ FAVOURITES' DAY, OFF, - \ (Special "Correspondent.) - . Perfect weather prevailed for the opening day of the Wairarapa Racing .Club's Autumn Meeting, and tuere was a largo crowd present from Wellington. and< the surrounding distriots. The Military Camp Band attended, aad their selections .were muoh appreciated by the crowd. The racing was good, but class was not well re- . presented, and there was also a dearth pf jockeys, which resulted in the scratching of-several horses. Not a eiiwle favourite scored dm-iiig- the day, antfin'the 1 Easter "Handicap and Nursery' Handicap ■ the winners, paid big dividends. fry Again was the only withdrawal from the Trial Hack Handicap, and Consultation, who was bracketed with Probation, was . reckoned the 'best of good things, while Starengo was second choice on the machine. At the start Humorist jumped off'-in front, and with Maisie Bell handy the pair , soon had the field strung out. Entering the straight Con- -, Bultation ran into second place, but had no ohance of reaohing the winner, and . over the last bit Starengo,'who was slow , to begin, came fast, and cut the bay maro out of second money. Probation and Altercation finished nest to the placed 1 horses. The fast pace set by the winner ' demoralised the field, which was strung put the whole way. Starengo, should. do better to-day. got, badly away, and was never prominent. / . Franbonnet was the public fanoy in.the ■ Hack Welter, but he got rid "of "his rider ' at the three-furlongs' post when in the middle of the field. Arlington began well, and with Sir Agnes led down the back from the top weight,! who was slow to • move, and Benison, who was in tho , centre of the field alongside Franbonnet. Lord Laddo had run into socond place at the bottom of the straight bur ho haa no ohance isith Arlington, who won nicely. Sir Agnea was a poor third, and then came Benison and Ulysses, with Malte- . garde well baok. Rewi Poto and Byron, who are under orders for' Feilding, and Montana, who \ has contracted a, cold, were withdrawnfrom the Easter Handicap, leaving eight runners. Red Ribbon was a good fitwrarite, but she seemed unable to act on the turns, and finished outside the - ■ horses. Marsinah set a fast pace for seven ■ furlongs,'and then to Tariiigar mutu,- who led. into cho straight, followed ' by Want and the favourite. Merrie Gain put in a good run, from the distance,, and . got up.on the post. Want was a length and a .half away, 'and then 1 came Red E-ibboii. Bertaufa ilame after the . race., Merrie Gain paid -the biggest divi-' . dend .of ihe day, whiohi, was surprising, as «he had galloped well on the track the v day previous. '.. ' • : . All the acceptors went to the post for \the Nursery Handicap. Menelaus was ■backed down to a, very short price, but ■ ihe did not begin with his customary dash,: and was never in charge. Struggle was' showing. out from Miss D<J Val Md the . favourite as they entered the straight, and in the - run home the light-weight won nicely from Struggle, with Lady General . third, and Menelaus and Devotion'next. The winner paid a good price, and as she - • 13 a well-grown filly a bit of weight should • not trouble her to-day. ' Botanist and. Lord Laddo were allowed to .forfeit their engagements in the Wingaimoana Handicap. Nicomar. Chillies, and Ladogeur were Dacked in that order, and the trio were in it at tho finish, which was a very oloso one, the top-weight gaining the victory by a head, but the runneiv-up was' most-unlucky on the journey, aita will do. better- next time out. Mount Victoria and Otter were prominent for half a mile, when Otter retired, but Mount Victoria- was still in -front, . e with Nioomar 'as the straight was 'enterid. Ladogeur then came fast oh the. outside, but, 'after being eased, the weight told in the run home, and lie had to.be ■iidden out to beat Ohillies, who had come from last inside two' furlongs. Nicomar .Will be better for' the race;' and' Chillies' should ilso show up to-day. , Coinnient was the favourite in the Mnhaki Hack Handicap, but she failed to x vrlin better, than a moderate fourth/ The winner turned up in Heeltap, who was Well backed, and after being iii behind the lea.ders to the home turn. ■ AV. Price Tushed him through, and he won very decisively from Happiness, who.ran her / best raice for some time. Amber and ' White, and Arrahna made the early, running; and the former, who' is very big, finished third. The favourite and . Sir Saracen were the nejt to finish. Heeltap had done a 'very smart gallop on the ' morning of : the races, and the occupants ■ of the trainers' stand were unanimous in declaring him the winner. He was ably handled by W. Price, who had the Blenheim, horse on the fenoe the. whole way till the straight was -reached. Numerous seratchings in the Wardell Handicap reduced the field to five run- 1 '■ ' ners. •It was a good betting race, the majority favouring tho ohances of Botanist. Marimba, who carries the same colours as' Ladogeur, jumped off in front', , and, attended by the favourite, the Birkenhead mare led to the turn, where her . rider called on her to go on, and in the run home she easily held the others at bay.
