The death 'pccurrcd in the Dcaconess Hospital, Edinburgh, on October 22, of tho Rev. Walter ilaclaren, Church of Scotland chaplain, Glasgow hospitals. Mr, Maclaren, who was in his fi't}"" eighth year, had been in failing health for somo time. He was a eon of the late Mr. Walter Gray Maclaren, printer and publisher, Glasgow, and was a na> tive. of the city. He was. eduqated_ at Glasgow Academy and the University, and took his divinity course at tho Glasgow Free Church College. For many years he, was a minister of 1 the New Zealand Presbyterian Church, under which his first charge was at Owaka, where no was stationed for many years. He was later at Bluff. During' his ministry in New Zealand ho took a prominent part in tho liquor prohibition movement, end his own district of Clutha was tho first to adopt prohibition.'' Returning to tho Home Country, lio was ordained a minister of _tho Church of Scotland, and about eight years ago he was appointed by tho Church as chaplain to the Glasgow hospitals. His sphere of labour included the Royal, the Western, and the Victoria Infirmaries, and the Glasgow Royal (/'ancer Hospital. In the course of his duties he came'into contact with a largo number of patients, _ who highly appreciated his ministrations, and among whom he made many friends by his bright and cheerful manner. He is survived by Mrs. Maclaren and by four sons and three daughters.

Major C. Hellier Evans, of Gisborne, has, 'says the Auckland "Herald," been appointed to command the cycle corps which is at present being formed in connection with the New Zealand Expeditionary Force.

The Rev. E. Drake, the newly-ap-pointed superintending minister of the South Wellington circuit, was welcomed at Trinity Methodist Church Schoolroom oil Wednesday evening at a most onjoyablo social gathering. _ Mr. W. H. Potts, circuit steward, was in the chair, and speeches eulogistic and. conveying hearty good' wishes were delivered by the Rovs. J. Chapman (Taranaln Street Church), J. Dawson (ex-president of conference), Richards (ministerial colleague of the Rev. Mr. Drake), Shirei (representing the Ministers' Association and Christian Endeavourers), and Messrs. S. D. Martin (Trinity), the Hon. C. M. Luke (on behalf of Donald Maclean Street Church), Edgar Carter (on behalf of the young people). To all these the Rev. Mr. Drake made a telling reply, and won the goodwill of all present. The proceedings were interspersed with music, songs, and recitations. Refreshments were supplied by the ladies of the congregation. Our Mastorton correspondent reports that a cable messago has been received announcing the death of Mrs- Hamilton, wife of Liout.-Colonel Hamilton, formerly aide-de-camp to Lord Islington, and only daughter of Mr. and Mrs, Charles Elgar, of Burnside, Wairarapa. The deceased was only twenty-five years of age. Councillor List has given notice to move at the next meeting of.tho Petona Borough Council: "That tho council dispenses with the services of single men who havo not volunteered." Mr. Lawrence Walker, who served his time with Messrs.
