CIVIC AFFAIRS
MEETING OF THE'CITY COUNCIL.
At Tuesday's meeting of the City Council, rlie Mayor (Mr. J. P. Lulce) presided, and there wore also present: Councillors W. T. Hildreth, R. A. Wright, M.P., A. Veitch. W. H. Bennett, Jno. Fuller, iun., M. F. Luckie, L. M'Kenzie, W. J. Thompson, A. R. Atkinson, J. Hutchosoiv, Jas. Godber, G; Frost, and W. H. P. Barber. The new procedure, which excludes the reading of tlio minutes, came into operation and was favourably commented upon on account of the time saved.
On :the recommendation of the Finance Committee, it was ' resolved: "That the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts be granted a subsidy, of £50 this year, towards the cost of maintenance of the Art Gallery."
A recommendation was adopted providing that such land-as is iiot required in Town Acre 1037 to. provide access to the Berhampore Hospital should be sold at such upsets as shall be fixed by the City. Valuer. The use of one of the Tillings Stevens motor chassis was granted to the Tramway Freight Department until it sliould ,be required by the council for other work. The contract of Messrs. Fleming and Company, Ltd., for advertising on the
tromcars was approved. . The Town Clerk was directed to inform the Wellington South Progressive Society,''in reply to their request for the removal of all the valuable exhibits in the Newtown 'Museum to a building to be erectcd in the Zoo grounds, that their proposal could not bo adopted. The society is also to bo advised that their" complaint as to tile alleged mismanagement of the Newtown Library Hall lias been i eferrod to tlie chairman (Councillor Wright) and the Chief Librarian to inquire into, together with the question of opening the museum daily.
; On the application of the Wellington Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association, an extension of the privilege of free admission for one season to the corporation baths -was granted to children who gain tho society's certificate of merit for, swimming a,mile or upwards. Tho officer in charge of cemeteries was authorised to erect eight new. wooden rubbish bins at the Karorl Cemetery, at a small cost. • An instruction was issued to the City Solicitor to complote an' agreement with Mr. E. Tonics for the removal of clay from the Town Belt at Salisbury Terrace, such agreement to be on the lines' recommended by the City Engineer. Authority was given for the purchase o{ 50 loads of soil for top-dressing the Williams Park tennis courts at Day's Bay. '
Authority also given for the purchase from India of ft. pair of Himalayan oiglit-hornod sheep, at an estimated cost of £24, subject to th<; Wellington, Zoological Society contributing £5 towards tho purchase,
. The Reserves Committee reported that they had been waited on by a' deputation from the Melrose Ratepayers' Association to ask that the Zoo feedhouse, adjacent to Park Road, be shifted to another portion of the grounds, in view of the obnoxious smell arising from the keeping of food in such house. The committee informed the deputation that instructions had already been given for the removal of all food from the house, and the committee decided to shift the house to some other moro suitable portion of the gardens. A sub-committee had been appointed to select such site, and the committee recommended that tenders be called'for the shifting of the building when the new site shall have been fixed. The recommendation was agreed to.
