PETONE COURT
A sitting of the Magistrate's Court was held at Petone yesterday before Mr. D. G. A. Cooper, S.M. George Stupples and W. M. Maslem, for failing to nave the words "licensed second-hand dealer" placed on their respective shops, .were each fined os., with 78.. costs. . J• M'Leod, for allowing a to be without a light, was fined 55., with 7s. costs. James Henry , Wood, for failing to contribute.to liis v mother's support, was ordered to pay the sum of Is. 6d. per week, the, Magistrate stating that de, fendant evidently had a hard row to line with five children to keep,'and one of them an invalid, and for that reason the amount of the order would be light. Win. Thomas liassett, on a similar charge with regard to the same complainant, did not appear, and was ordered to contribute the sum of 2s. fid. per week. Samuel Clifford Crowther, for cruelly ill-treating a cockatoo, the property of Mrs. A. Willoughby, was fined 40s„ with 7s. costs, the Magistrate stating that the fine would have been heavier had not Crowther had provocation. Harry E. Davenport, for whom Mr P. ;W. Jackson appeared, was charged with keeping a brothel. The Magistrate said that, while the case was highly suspicious, the evidence was not sufficient to sustain the .charge. The case was dismissed. CIVIL BUSINESS. Judgment by " default was given in the case of H. V, Baker v. H. and M. Gennett for the amount of ,tho claim' £.12 10s., with costs 2<ls. 6d., there be! ing no appearance of defendants. L. M'ilvide was ordered to pay T Burt the sum of ,£5 os. lid. on or before June 20, 1916, or suffer five days' imprisonment.
