Case of J. I'atte (19), for rescuing Private itauawa from drowning at sea, Decomber 8, 1915. Private ilanawa, a patient on tho hospital ship Maheno,, jumped overboard; life-buoys were immediately thrown over, and tho ship was stopped. _ Ilanawa was too exhausted'to catch hold of the buoy,'and J. I'atto dived overboard and swam with a life-buoy to his assistance, " succeeding in rescuing him. Both men were very; exhausted under the conditions. It was decided to forward the papers to tlio parent society, the local society having no jurisdiction in the case. ' Noble ; Johnstone (40), for attempt-, ing to rescue Henry Vincent and Robert Johnson from suffocation at Qcaio, on February 2, 1916, at 8 a.m. On the date stated Vincent went down a well ICO feet in depth, his partner , Johnson becoming anxious, getting no signals, called for assistance. Johnstone was lowered down into the well, his feet touched the man, hut he was then rendered unconscious by the impure air, and whs hauled to the top again. Little hopes were entertained of rescuing the t>vo men alive. Johnstone, recovering his seiises, made two more attempts to .reach the men, and after considerable difficulty succeeded in bringing the bodies to the surface. On examination, it was found that life was extinct in both" cases. A silver medal was awarded. The case of Dr. Thomas G. Short (30), for rescuing Robert M'Combie (25) from drowning at Granity on February 2, 1816. Dr. Short swam out a distance of about 50 yards, in spite'of a rough sea and strong back' wasii, to the rescue of Robert M'Combie, who had got into difficulties and was unable to regain the shore. After considerable exettion j and personal risk Dr. Sho/t managed ;to get M'Combie back to the shore. A bronze medal was awarded. In the case of Arthur Radford (12), for attempting to rescue six children from drowning at Wellington on March 9, LSI 6, a framed certificate -was granted. In the case of Ernest Jenkins (17) and Douglas Telfar (14), for rescuing , three girls from drowning at Waitara on January 18, 1916, Jenkins was awarded a silver medal, and Telfar a bronze medal. In the case of Walter H. Husmar (41), for rescuing Miss Hanson from drowning at the King's Wharf,. Wellington, a certificate was awarded. In the case of C. Turner, for rescuing Miss Hansen from drowning at the King's Wharf, Wellington, on November 13, 1915, a letter of commendation was granted. In the case of Reginald W. Thomas (16), for rescuing Mavis Lourie (14) from drowning at AVanganui, a broiizo medal was awarded. In the casq of A. Edgeler, Tirnaru, who attempted the rescue of Joseph Mcultan from' drowning in the Opihi River on March 25, 1916, a letter of commendation was awarded.
