NOTES AND COMMENTS
[BT GtENCOB."!
G. Price went south last evoning with tho two-year-olds Ceasefiro and Nystad, also Eovalenta and Sedd-ul-Bahr. Both two-year-olds will start in the Champagne Stakes, and Oliver will have the mount on the former, while after doing odb day at Tauhereuikau Bell will go south, and will ride Nystad. Though tho Awapuni form does not bear him out, Prico thinks tho colt is ths better of the pair. Ecvalenta's Awapuni form did not make j her out to have much chance at Hiccarton, but hor trainer will not have it that this was tho best she is capablo of.
• Splendid acceptances have been received for the I'eilding Jockey Club's Easter meeting, and the gathering looks like being as big a success as in former years. Thirteen horses havo been paid up for in the Cup, but Indigo and Byron may lie racing in other parts' on that day. In tho Mangaone Stakes there are ele\en acceptors, all of whom are likely to seo tho post. ' Hushabye made such a good showing at Awapuni, when not ready, that sho will probably bo a much better mare by Monday next, and may start favourite in the open six furlongs. Master Lupin is the early fancy For the Cup, but if a suitable rider can bo found for Sir Solo, the Auckland Cup winner should be very hard to baat over twelve furlongs. At Troutham on the sesoud day he fiflifilied. jijeji,
out of a place, aftor being well back in the early stages of tho race.
The absence of Flingot from the Pending and Hastings nominations would suggest that nil is not well with Mr. H. SI. Campbell's gelding, unless it be that he is to be put by for winter racing.
The Coronet gelding Grattan was shipped south last evening, on his way to the West Coast, where ho is to race next week.
The Huntcrville sportsman, Mr. Jas. Bull, is at preßent on a visit to Wellingto say farewell to his daughter, who is leaving for a trip to England.
General acceptances for the C.J.C. meoting nro due to-night, and final payments for tho Great Easter and Autumn Handicaps are also due.
Sir George Clifford's Antagonist colt Wrestler was lame after competing at the Awapuni meeting, and lie is a doubtful starter at* tho .Canterbury Jockey Club's meeting next week.
Should Chortle start in the Eden Stakes at Ellerslie on Saturday'he will have to put up ( 71b. penalty, but. escapes extra poundage in the Easter Handicap. This is taken in Auckland as a fair indication that the latter event will be his first day's mission. , •
The Great Autumn Handicap candidate, Rorke's Drift, has arrived at Riccarton to fulfil his engagements at the C.J.C. Easter Meeting, which opens on. Monday.
Greencap, winner of tho Hawkesbury Handicap on Saturday, is by Mnrtagon, the sire of so many good stayers. Greencap is engaged in the Sydney Cup, and is one of the well-fancied division.
Oxenhope has now earned n 141b. penalty for lx>th . big races at Riccarton, so, that a success for hirn in the Easter Handicap would not entail any further penalty for the Great Autumn Handicap. If successful in the first event, the chest-. nut gelding would probably be m ueh fancied in; the second, race.
Special train arragements are advertised for the Wairarapa meeting, which opens on Saturday. The 8.30 a.m. train from Lamb-ton will arrive-in,-plenty ct time for tho first race, which shirts at 12.10 p.m. .
At Aivapuni G. Price has just, finished breaking-in the Birkenhead—Strathspey colt, -which he purchased at the Waikanae sales in November. A half-brother by* Boniform to Cease Eire has also been handled. The latter is a stylish-looking youngster, and was much admired lost week.
His victorj' at Awapuni earned Tararu Jack a lfltb., penalty for the Brighton Hurdles at Ellerslie, so his owner has deoided to leave him in the south for the Feilding meeting, where he is an acceptor in both hurdle events on the opening day.
