OFFENSIVE ON THE RUSSIAN FRONT

ENEMY TO ATTEMPT THE MAXIMUM HEAVY CONCENTRATIONS IN THE NORTH By Telegraph—Press Aseoototion—Copyright i ("Times" and Sydney "Sun" Services.) (Rec. April 18, 5.6 p.m.) j ' London, April 17, 6.5 p.m. The "Times" correspondent at Petrograd reports: "All the symptoms indicate that the renewed phase of the struggle on the Eastern front is likely to surpass everything we have hitherto witnessed. Both belligerents are resolved to force a definite issue. The Russians' reorganisation has now reached a point when they will be.able to give their antagonists as good as they get, if not better. It is difficult to prophesy whether the chief blow will bo directed on the Riga, Dviusk, or Narotch front. Meanwhile the enemy's movement on our right is regarded as an auxiliary operation, on which the success of'the spring offensive will depend. The Lake region is glutted with Germans, their concentrations here being at the expense of their centre. There are considerable concentrations also in the rear of Von Hindenburg's left flank at Dvinsk and Imorgon. Thanks to the railways these can swiftly reaoh any* point on the three-hundred-, mile front. "We continue successfully to harass the foe in Galicia. Austrian prisoners state that all the Germans have been, withdrawn from Galicia and sent to France, but experts believe that they have largely been moved to the nortH." ' , NGERMAN OFFICIAL COMMUNIQUE. • Amsterdam, April 17. A German communique states: "The Russians have developed great activity atvthe bridgehead at Dvinsk." FIGHTING GROWING IN INTENSITY GERMAN FORCES REGROUPED FOR BIG EFFORT (Rec. April 18, 9.30 p.m.) ' • ' Petrograd, April 18. The fighting on the Russian northern front is growing in intensity. The German forces have been regrouped to enable Von Hindenburg to' commence a maximum effort to take Dvinsk. A German attack is developing at Ikskull (? Mulcts). bridgehead and ■ the Dvinsk positions south of Garbunovka and Platonovka, which were fiercely contested in the autumn.
