The outstanding features of the news to-day are three—a serious crisis in the British, Cabinet over the compulsion issue; a heavy attack on the Verdun front by two German divisions; and the initiation of a big movement by the Germans against the Russian ■northern flank. The- Cabinet crisis is not only grave, but extremely difficult, for, according to reports, Mr. Lloyd George, insisting on the Amy Council's requirements being fulfilled, maintains that only a general compulsion 'will meet these requirements, and is prepared to force a.decision wen to the extent of resigning from the Cabinet. The London Press ■is wholly concerned with the crisis, which has developed very rapidly, and a poll of Press opinion is cabled to-day. The" German attack at Ver- • dun succeeded) at fearful cosi; in establishing for the enemy a fooling in a small salient position. On the Russian front the German forces, 1 regrouped for what is stated to be a maximum effort against the Russian line, are reported to De developing ' a big offensive, to withstand which the Russians are stated to be well equipped.
