NIAGARA'S GOOD STEAMING. ■ A Tory, smart passage from Sydney was made by the R.M.S. Niagara, whioh reached Auckland at 9 o'clock on Sunday evening (states a Press Association, message). The liner.left the New South Wales port at 5.50 p.m. on Thursday, and covered the distance of 1281 miles in 3 days 2 hours. Deducting one and a half hours for tho difforenco. in time, this works out at 17 i knots, an exceptionally fine record.

LOSS OF THE SOCOTRA. . The circumstances surrounding tho stranding and loss of the P. and 0. liner Socotra on the coast of France a few weeks ago have been inquired into by an English Marine Court, ivhich eat in Jjondon recently. The Court found as follows: —"That the stranding and subsequent loss of the vessel was caused by the , master (Captain R. P. Stevenson) neglecting to take steps to ascertain and verify the position of the ship at and after noon on November 25, 1915, and in mistaking La, Touquet light for Beachy. Head ■ light. The Court finds him alone in fault, and suspends his certificate for six months from this date. The Court agreed to recommend the. captain for a chief officer's certificate during his suspension. MESS-TABLE GOSsIP. Mr. E, C. Kelson, fourth officer of the Monowai, has joined the Manuka in a similar capacity in place of Mr. J. 8. Drover. ■ Mr. Ryan, wireless operator of the Manuka, has transferred to tho Wimmera in , a similar capacity, Mr. Frominger, <»f the Manuka, having joined the Wimmera.' Mr. Bullock has joined the Oorlnna as chief officer, in place of Mr. Mflhood, who has come ashore on sick leave. Mr.- M'Kenzie, late third officer of the Warrimoo, has joined the Waipori as second officer, relieving Mr. Anderson, who has joined the Tarawera as second. Mr. P. H. M'Donald, late chief engineer of tho Mapourika, is awaiting orders at Diraedin. Mr. W. C. F. liicliardson, chief engineer of the Stormbird, having come ashore, Mr. C. Naiemith has joined the vessel in his place. Discharge of lierlcase oil having been delayed by tho wet weather last weok, the Oyrena ie not expected to leave Wellington for Lyttellon now until Wednesday at the earliest. Tho Union Company's steamer Warrimoo, which has for some months been engaged in Government work, was to sign on a crew at Port Chalmers yesterday. She will leave Dunediu to-day for Timaru, Lyttelton, and Auokland. Before leaving Port Chalmers the Warrimoo will load 600 bales of wool for transhipment to the Koromlko at Lyttelton, this cargo being destined for Sydney.

After a lengthy absence from this port the Westport Coal Compauy'B collior Canopus is .expected to show up here to-mor-row from Westport. She will leavo for Lyttelton the same day. Tho Defender is expected from Lytteltori to-day. She will proceed to Hokitika tomorrow. r

Ait or her delay in Wellington on account of the rain impeding loading operations, the Wimmera got away south last night. The vessel will be one day late leaving Bluff for Melbourne direct.

The Westralia i 6 due in port on Thursday next from southern ports. She will proceed north the same evening, and will remain at Napier over Good Friday. Both Napier and Gisborno will be worked on Saturday, and it is expected that- the vessel will reach Auckland on Sunday, leaving that port for Sydney on April 25-one day late.

It is expected that the Bosamond will arrive from the Bluff and way ports on Thursday.

The new liner ■ Cumberland arrived at Gisborne, from Auckland yesterday. Sho has yet to work Napier before coming on hero on Friday next.

Tho services of a second engineer having been secured' for the Amokura, now at Bluff, it was expected that she would depart from that port for .the southern Islands »t noon yesterday.
