MEMENTO OF GRATITUDE
FROM WOMEN OF ENGLAND. The Defence Minister has just' received a very handsome silk Union Jack and staff, and a silver shield presented to New Zealanders by some patriotio women in England. The llag is an exceeding! v fine . one, and tho shield,. of chaste design, is-.also a very desirable trophy.' The shield, which is heartshaped, and convex, hears tho inscription: "To New Zealand Heroes, from the Women of England," and in tho ccntre, in a circlet: of, bays, - "Gallipoli, 1015." , \
Accompanying the gifts is the following letter from one of the leaders in the proposal to pay this very pretty .compliment to New Zealand/Mrs. Herbert Alingtoa:— . ' . "On behalf of some Women of England, I ask you to accept a Union Jaclc and th? accompanying shield, which they have entrusted to permanently unfit New Zcalnnders returning' home by the. s.s. Turalciua. It is their wish that the flag' and shield should be placed in some conspicuous position in the Chamber of the House of Representatives, or .wherever you may Consider most suitnble, as a memento of the gratitude of women in England for the part taken, by their overseas brothers'in this great Struggle. By the express wish of the donors the presentation was a purely personal expression of the gratitude of Englishwomen'. It had no official or political' connection with New Zealand, ns their desire was to give the men a bright and hearty send-off, and to wish theni God speed on, their homeward journey.' l Mr. and Mrs. John Perry (Sulphur Wells, Masterton) have hecn spending a few days in Wellington.
