ANNUAL MEETINGS OF HOUSEHOLDER!
MATTERS OF INTEREST.
The annual statutory meetings of householders convened for the purpose of •receiving the reports of tho outgoing committees, and electing committees for the ensuing year, were held last evening. Mount Cook. Mr. W. E. Fuller' presided over am attendance o( about 40 householders of the Mouut Cook Schools district. The annuai report stated that tho year had been a satisfactory one, and that the attendance at the boys' school had been better than for nine years past, The average attend- ■ ances at the three schools were: —Boys, 338; girls', 227; infants', 329. The headmaster, Mr. C. Bary, in his report, drew the attention of to the fact that there seemed to bo a'hick of parental coutrol in respect to certain of the junior boys. Truancy and absenteeism were not •so bad as formerly, although unpunctuality. was a persistent and difficult problem. The school had done well in sport, the senior football team annexing the schools championship, winning tho cup outright, while the .school had also secured championship honours in swimming. He referred'to what lie described as the unfair competitiou which existed between the high schools and registered schools like Banks' College on the one side, and tho primary schools on the other side, in the matter of scholarships, and said that the Teachers' Institute proposed to deal with the matter at. its. annual conference in' Wellington shortly. 'Both, reports were adopted, and the following new committee was elected for the coming year:—Messrs. W. E. Fuller (chairman), C. H. Barratt (secretary), J. M. Wilson (treasurer), G. B. Purdey, K. Simpson, A. C. Blair, It. S. M'Nair, J. R. Burley, J. E. M'Pherson. / Votes of thanks to the Education Board, and also to tho teaching staff, which, stated the secretary, had laboured during the past year under exceptional Circumstances, were carried by acclamation. Terrace. My. J. A. Thompson presided at the meeting at tho Terrace School. The following committee was elected:—Mr. J. A. Thompson (chairman), Mrs. Dyson, Miss England, Messrs. A. Johnston, H. W. Lloyd, B. F. Skinner, J. Darling, Rev. H. Van Staveren, and H. A. Gold. The oommitteo's report has already appeared. Clyde Quay School. Mr, David Robertson presided at the twenty-sixth annual meeting of householders at Olyde Quay School. The report paid a tribute to tho arduous work of the headmaster, Mr. W. T. Grundy, arid his staff during the very trying year. The staff suffered considerably oy the loss of three of their members—Messrs. Dempsey, East,' and Fossette—wbt> had volunteered for military service. The number of pupils on the roll was "720, rs against 741 last year, the average attendance being 670—the same as the I 'previous year.. The school buildings had teen added to, and considerably improved during the year., The sum of .£263 I3s. 9}d. had been contributed by the school children towards the war- funds. The balancesheet showed a credit balance of .£l2 Is. lOtl. • , As only the required number had been nominated for places on the committee no election was necessary. The committee is as follows:—Messrs. T. Forsyth (chairman), W. B. Strong (secretary), J. Mitchell (treasurer), L. Button, R. Hatch, H. .T. Hariand, H. j. Fossette, L. 11. Partridge, and R. Scfitt. Roseneath School. Mr. H. M. Morrison 'presided at tho meeting held at Koseneath School. The following committee was elected Messrs. H. M. Morrison (chairman), H. B. Van Borssum (secretary and treasurer), Mrs.; Low, Messrs. J. Smith, A. Leigh Hunt, S. Stott, W. J. Gaudin, J. B. Brinsden, Captain Jelley, Tho annual report,has already appeared. Newtown School. The annual report of the committee stated , that a considerable improvement had been effected in the playground. Tho report also congratulated tho Library Committee of the City Council on its continued interest in. the school's library exchange system, which provided a very valuable addition to the school library. The committee also referred to tho scholars' efforts in patriotic matters, notably in the collection for homer, less Belgian children on November 5, raising a sum of .£55 Bs. altogether. The committee had to thank Mr. H. Crengel . for presenting a gold medal for the dux ; of tho school, and also the' W.C.T.U. : for essay prizes.- Mr. Parkinson (head- , master) and • the staff were thanked for i their work in maintaining the standard i of the 6chool. , ■ , The following committee were return- , ed unopposed:—Herbert Baillie, Richard Brown, John Castle, Edward Collie, Al- j fred Crosbie, John Heavy, Emma Webb, W. Wiles, Mary A. Wright. Mr. R. H. i Chinclien (seventeenth year) vas appointed secretary and treasurer, and Mr. J. Castle was appointed chairman for his sixth term., Wellington South. ■ ] • Mr. Geo. Haigh occupied the chair at c the meeting of householders of the Wei- i lington South School, held last evening.' e The report of the committee expressed r its thanks to the headmaster for his r practical assistance in the beautifying c of the grounds. ./ 1 The Education Board had been approach- i ed for the improvement and grading of t the playgrounds, and the sum of <£50 f was offered by the board towards the c cost of tho work. The matter was still j under consideration, and the committee T urged the incoming committee to make a 1 special effort, to have this work com- J pleted during the coming vear. The i headmaster was heartily thanked for the r cordial assistance tendered by him in the i committee's duties. ■ ■ . ' > The school accounts showed a credit ° balance of £40 10s. lid. Upchurch. ■ Subsequently, Mr. Start. appointed chairman of the committee, and Mr. E. H. Minifie secretary. Kilblrnie. There _was a fair attendance of householders last evening at tho annual election of a school committee for the Kilb.l.rll:e Mr. J. J. Clarke presided. It was stated that the number of scholars on the roll, was 392, the average attendance being 357. The school's roll of honour contained the names 'of 65 ex-scholars, who had offered their services to' their country. Three of them— Major R. Price, and Ptes Ed. Fisher and N. Keasbery—had given their lives for tho cause. During the year the children had contributed towards the Wounded Soldiers' Fund., The election resulted as follows:—Messrs. A. G. Jorgensen (chairman), E.- E. Stoupe (secretary),. C. F. Worth, A. Rose, A. G. Wallace, A. Buckmaster, and J. Cheesman. _ There are two vacancies on the committee which the Education Board will be asked to fill. Maranui. At the meeting of householders of the Maranui district, the following committee was elected for the ensuing year:— Messrs. A. A. Gellatly (chairman), Jas. Christie (secretary), and Messrs. H. R. Page, F. C. Gentry. P. G. Easson, A. W. Brailsford, F. J. Evans, H. E. Moston, and S. G, Lovell. > Brooklyn. The election of tho Brooklyn School Committee was well attended. The new committee is composed of Messrs. D. R. Kennedy (chairman), E. Hill, G. Evans, V. R. M'lsaac, W. J. Coventry, E. R. Mara, T. M'Dowell, J. Burton, and A. J. White... Messrs. D. R. Kennedy (chairman) and A. J. White (secretary) were reelected. A hearty vote of thanks to the Education Board and the local teachers was passed. Northland. There was a far attendance at tho Northland meeting, considering .the weather. For the required committee of seven only four nominations had been received, and as no more .were forthcoming the four were duly .elected: Messrs. A. Paterson (chairman), M. Walsh, J.. Wirichcombo. and T. Burkett (secretary). These will
deal with the filling of the remaining/ three vacancies. The meeting instruotea the incoming- committee to have a suitable honours board er'ecled in the school. A vote of thanks was accorded the EducaS tion 'Board for its work in connection with the improvement- of tho school grounds. In connection vith the recent remarks of the Minister of Education in regard to the adoption of some better bjb. torn of dealing with school sites and affording some relief in cases where limit* ed space -had resulted in congested play, ing areas, the meeting decided to bring under the Minister's notiec the fact that ' in the Northland district thero was cer- ' tain ground which could bo adapted for r sqliool purposes. Karori. An attendance of about 10 householders . wero present at the election of tho Ka. , rori School Committee'. The report for [ the past twelve months showed that the t children had contributed JG2C 16s. sd. to , patriotic funds. A special -drill clas3 had , been formed for the purpose of rectifying . physical defects. As to the healthiness of the' school, it was stated that during ' tlie past week there had been an average I attendance of 218, out of 259. The balancesheet showed that the year's operations resulted in a credit balance of £27 19s, . Id. The election resulted in the follow j. ing committee:—Messrs. AV. H. Nimmo ' (chairman), E. B. The annual meeting of householder!. ; of the Te Aro and Mitchelltown comJ bmed district schools was held at tha To Aro -School, and was presided over ' by Mr. W.' H. Hampton. Mr. Lawlor, chairman of the outgoing committee, 1 stated that the receipts for the yeat ; were .£329 17s. 4d., .£132 17s. 2d. of which. ■ had been handed, over to the new cotnJ mittee. There was a credit balance ia the bank of ,£66 6s. 3d. The school had ; been closed during the infantile paralvsia ; epidemic. The chairman (Mr. W.' H, Hampton) spoke strongly against tha • bad treatment the joint schools had re* ' ??!y e , c ' the hands of tho board. The • Mitchelltown School was, he thought, a disgrace to Wellington. Both schools ■ were, in his opinion, most unsuitable, ; and ho suggested that one up-to-cfato ' school should be erected on the site oe- • cupied by the old Mitchelltown School, The meeting resolved to take steps to urge the Government to take notice of! the conditions of the Te Aro Schools' > with the view to their improvement. The old. question of the gaol site was ones more stressed as a more desirable place for an up-to-date school. i The election resulted:—Messrs. H. A, W. Mackenzie (chairman), A. W. Curtis (secretary), J. Hyland, P. M'Neil, J. J,Flyger, fl[. B. Long, C. B. Dixon, R) Cooke, and Mts. S. Evans. Island Bay. The meeting of householders held a? , the Island Bay School was presided ore* by Mr. J. A. Shorland. The followingcommittee was elected:—Messrs. J. A. Shorland (chairman), H. P. Clarke (secretary), J. Conder, W. H. Potts, E. J, Colley, L.F. Keys, W.Kerr, E. H. Bar-i ton', and J. T. Mills. Mr. R. A. Wright, M.P., who was present, unveiled an Honours Board, con* taming 36 names of old boys of the school now serving with the. forces. Tha sum of £4 17s. 6d. was collected in the room to help pay for the inscribing o{ the names on tho board. . Ngaio. A good muster of householders attended the election of the Ngaio School Committee, which resulted as follows:-. Mossrs. H. Brenton-E/ule (chairman), L A. Browne, G. Pitch, T. Barnes, J. D. Williams, and Mesdames Chativin and Darvall. i ■ Khandallah. . 1 A sparsely attended meeting received the reports of tho outgoing committee and that of the head teacher- of the Khandallah .School, These gave evidence of' a quiet year of progress. The attendance snowed a small increase, the roll numbers being 57 boys and 58 girls. The school roll of honour contained filenames of 49 old boys at thfi front, one of them, a naval surgeon, losing his life under Are.- . One of tho most pressing-■ needs was tlie separation of the lower standards by-the provision of oroper rooms. The reports deplored the lack of .interest shown by householders. This year only four nominations were' received for the seven vacancies. The msmbers of the committee elected are:—Messrs. W. Bourke, P. S. Nathan, M. C. Smith, and T., S. Chamberlin. ■ ; ' * - Berhamporo, The first committee to take charee of tho affairs of the newly-erected Berhampore School was presided over, by Mr. J c , Shand, with Mr. G. W. Key as 6ecre' tary. The annual report recorded appreciation of the excellent servici rendered by the headmaster JUKI his staff. "After a short period of eight months," the report continues,. "some ol the residents will be surprised to learn, than we are at this early period of oud history in need of increased accommodation for our infant department. ' our committee has placed/the matter of our urgent need before the Education Board, but so far no definite reply has been received as to what action is-to be taken to meet the urgency of this matter.** Eastern Hutt. Tho first annual report presented at tha Eastern Hutt School electors' meeting stated that the school opened on February 2, 1915, with 298 scholars; to-day the ' nurnbep had risen to 342. The school hasattained- a high standard of effioiency under the capable leadership of the headmaster (Mt. A. MTBain), supported by an excellent (.tall. Two succcssful concerts had been held during the year, resulting in tlie 6uin of £S 10s. being raised for the prize fund, and .£l2 Bs. for the piano fund. _ A library of 80 books had been established,- and an agreement entered into for the purchase of a piano. Th« percentage of attendance wa6 94 per cent The following were elected:—Messrs. H, Baldwin, J. 0. Anson, P. C. Brash, W. H, Preethey,' A. Hardham, W. B. Hardy, P. J. Huthnance, A. Treseder, and E. D. Woodward. Mr. Baldwin was elected chairman, and Mi\ Hardham secretary.
: Johnsonville. >- The report of tho outgoing committee of the Johnsonville School, presented, at the election meeting last evening, showed that tho contract for two: asphalt tennia courts has been let at a cost of ,£lO7. A bazaar organised by the ohildren realised the sum of .£65 (or the Wounded Fund. The committee deplored the fact that tho matter of proper drainage had not been attended to, and a resolution was passed by. the meeting condemning the Education Board's proposal to put in a septic tank, and insisting upon the fulfilment of tlio promise to connect the school' with tho Town Board's drainage system. Tho committee's statement of accounts showed a credit balance of .£27 Is. 4d. The election resulted in the following committee .—Rev. F. H. Petrio (chairma)i); F. J. Embury (secretary), F. W. Pritchard, F. H. Futter, F. Wales, T. L. Jackson, J. J. Esson, F; T. O'Neill, and E. Turner. Hutt District Hign School. At the Lower Hutt District High School the following were elected (unopposed) Messrs. E. P. Eishworth, J. Wray, W. G. Meldrum, J. Hancock, J. Doran, A. J. West, W. L. Smith, J. W. F. MDougall, W. G. Alexander. The annual report has already appeared. Petone District High School. At the .Petone District High School th« following wore olected (unopposed):— Messrs. M'Kenzie, Pawson, AbrahaJl, Spurr, Wight. Seddon, Scholfield, Haddv, and Campbell. The report has alreadyappeared. Ptitone West. The names of Messrs. J. Castle, J. Cotton, W. IT. Shardlow, H. E. Morris, H. Jay, H. R. Johnson, and W. Bird were all the nominations received at the Petone West mectiug, and it was decided to forward the names of Messrs.
