MATTERS OF INTEREST FROM #AE AND NEAS. ' (By Imogen.)
A Call from Samoa. In these days of sensational happenings in connection with the war, Samoa mid the men who are stationed there are upt. to be overlooked. A reminder of tile existence of the latter has been received by the Mayoress 111 the shape 01' a letter in wb.ich the writer somewhat plaintively remarks how much he i!lid his comrades would appreciate some of the gramophone records that are left at the Town Hall, particularly acme Scotch ones. In Samoa, he tells -Mrs. Luke, they have only three records. left, and their stock of other music is very low and very well used. In consequence of the letter /the Mayoress would be very glad to receive contributions of records and other music to 'be forwarded to these men, and'an Easter gift of such, though somewhat belated, would without a doubt be greatly appreciated. . In acknowledging the generous" assistance given by the ladies at the civic reception to the returned sick and wounded soldiers, held 111 the Town Hall last week, the Mayor and Mayoress wish to thank Messrs. Gamble and Creed for tea and sandwiches, and their staff for also making a further supply of sandwiches: Miss Maxwell-for sponge sandwiches : D. J. Nathan and Co. for butter; Miss-Sidey and Mr. Glen, of the Botanical Gardens, for flowers; Mrs. L. Blundell, for badges; Mr. Bock, for engraving. Thanks were also due to Miss Olarlc (secretary of the Ladies' Entertainment Committee) and Miss . Bock (treasurer). The Women's Committee of the British Red Cross and Order of St. John (Wellington Branch) has forwarded through the Mayoress a cheque for £50 to Lieutenant-Colonel Moorhouso, to be used lor supplying extra comforts. . for the soldiers in hospitals. This sum 13 the result of tho appeal which was made by the Mayoress some time ago ior Red Cross teas to augmenv. the fluids of their Rod Cross work. Countess of Liverpool Work at the Town Hall. v
The Countess of Liverpool Fund Committee has devoted a largo amount of tinie- and money to the packing ;of tho Dominion gift parcels. '.'ln'addition tothis members are also making,: each' trionth large supplies' 'of ''housewives"! and holdalls, filling' them and:; sending; thorn away to the Defence Department; for dispatch to.'the men. at the-front.! These efforts;alone show how earnestly' women\ are working to supply useful and necessary articles to the men who are fighting: the nation's • battle's in -countries that'are very far aiyay from New Zealand. Needless to say, there Is a largo amount of monotony to bo. endured in connection with the worn. The handling- of tie samo number of pins and needles,' laces, buttons,' and nails, to say nothing of! other articles, day. after day till the three thousand parcels arc completed for each - month is not very interesting, ;but it all has so be done. The expert assistance of Mr: Tripe is greatly appreciated by the committee, as the w;ork of fixing domes to. "housewives" and holdalls is tiresome and not by any means easy. Without, his assistance it is . felt that the necessary suppljes ■ would 1 not be' ready by the' time-, the date for their discateh once more fame round. ■ Patriotic branches -in the country districts and towns are doing excellent work, and the secretary, Mrs. A. Crawford, has. a very "busy time, and has frequently much to commend in the parcels with which she is confronted as a result of their energies. Ail examination of the holdalls, which .are-always mada up into, bundles of tens/ is made by Mrs. Fitchett, to see that they -aro made .according to the regulation sample. ' .. " . The demand for wool is a very heavy one, particularly by some of the schools In Wellington, and Mrs. Tripp has constant' tails'.niade upon her, as the shelves 1 testify. The 6inall, room in , which she is; stationed, with other workers, is an exceedingly busy one. There Mrs. Murphy. Mrs. 'I'oivnsend, and.Mrs. Thompson, with helpers, are to be seen hard at work making up the gift parcels, while Mrs. Barltrop gets the handkerchiefs ready to be made by the school children.- In the city councillors' room adjoining is a perfect hive of industry, the making J 'arid ■ filling • of "housewives" snd _ holdalls, occupying the time and attention of a great many workers. ;At the present time the fill- i ing of these articles is the .great : achievement of.the moment. ::
lii addition: to Mr. Tripe. Who was fot u very, .long time the only gentleman■who assisted with the work at the Town Hall, there are now assisting Mr. Mathews, -Mr.* Spencer, and Mr. Magtnhity, who are yery expert with hammer, and saw, ' and who have given- several evenings to the making of. the/ cases Sn which ,the Dominion parcels are packed.:; Mr. Eountree, of the Seatoun has most kindly assisted Mrs. Townsend' (who is in charge of; tlje gift parcel department) in the packing of these "parcels, , having given all his holiday time to this work, as well as-sten-cilling cases and working in other ways. Several' girls have also made a point of assisting in packing , the cases of gift -goods. ; V ' ' Y:
The Mayoress, Mrs. Luke, lias said that, she cannot speak too highly of the ■women who have stood by her ; and, assisted so'generously with their energy and theirimeans. since ''August 5, 1.914, Sn .this work, of,,providing comforts for the soldiers at 'the 1 front/ These same women, who came forward on "Black
Monday," as it is how called, have been working continuously over since. Tho Town Hall is known to them now almost as well and as constantly as their owii homes, and it certainly lias been tho channel through which many a homo has had its load of care and anxiety lightened, through the knowledge that whatever lies in tho power of women to do for the men away in the fighting lino wil) be dono by theso workers to the utmost degree.'
