TONNAGE CRISIS REVIEWED
There iB no lack of interest in the news from the various war fronts to-day, and from certain of these the developments are of great importance, and substantial as regards results. The British have achieved a success over the Turks in Mesopotamia; the Russians have inflioted' a, severe defeat on the Turks west of Erzerum, and are now in .energetic pursuit of'the disorganised enemy. -The Italians, {simultaneously with; the German offensive at Verdun, initiated a comprehensive and telling Offensive against the Austrians along their front, and the results are summed up in a dispatch from Rome and '•in the story of one of the British war.correspondents. On the Russian Eastern front, • successful operations against the Austrians on ', the Strypa havo resulted in the withdrawal of the enemy, while a ' German offensive'in the north, by von Hindenburg's forces, was twice hurled back. There .is a comparative calm at Verdun. Successful mine affairs and bombardments are reported from the British front. The German pirate war, so far as the United States is concerned, has reached the stage of the reported "last word" to the Huns on this subject, In the meantime the British tonnage problem is growing more,6erious, and marine insurance rates : have,, .taken another jump. The conscription issue has suddenly become the most important question of the moment, and an announcement by Mr. Asquith is expected., ■
