TONNAGE USED FOR HOP IMPORTS
WOULD CARRY 1,000,0000wt. OF WHEAT. Kent is very nrach interested in the suggestion, that Mr, M'Konna (Chan-, cellor of the Exchequer) should impose a duty on imported hops, just as new duties were imposed last September on cinema films, clocks and watches, motor cars, and musical instruments. Mr. A. G. Luck, a well-known Liberal, of Tunbridge Wells, is supporting the proposal on tile twofold; ground . that it would bring rovenuo for Mr. M'Kenna, and save tonnage for Mr. Runciman.' With regard to the former, the average annual importation of foreign hops for the last five years is 194,576cwt., and tho declared value £1",185,048. America imposes a hop duty equal to 745. per cwt. An equivalent duty, says Mr. Luck, would bring £719,931 to the Treasury. , I. would also keep gold in the country, and as for tho extra tonnage 6pace Mr. Luclc advances the following interesting calculations, reckoning the ton .of shipping at 40 cubic feet:*— Cubic feet. 1 ton of dry pulp (for paper) ... 65 1 ton of wet pulp (for paper) . 50 1 ton of sugar 48 1 ton of wheat 47 1 ton of liops .... 250 During 1915, 200,337cwt. of hops were imported, which required 2,504,212 cubic. feet in our vessels. In this space, 1,065,620cwt. of wheat, or 1,043,420cwt. of sugar,, or 1,001,680cwt. of wet pulp could be imported. Lord Selborne ha 6 appealed to us "on- national grounds to buy nothing from abroad which can bo produced at home." We can produce, says Mr. Luck, hops without the aid of any man of military age.
