MANAWATU MEETING DESERT GOLD STILL UNBEATEN. By Tel.Cßra.ph.—(Special Correspondent.) Palmerston N., April 1,1. The Manawutu Autumn Meeting concluded to-day in briglit weather. 'Tho totalisator handled £2<)M, as against i2i,558 ou' the corresponding day last year. The total lor- tho meeting was ■£•10,586, as against iIoO.'JIU last yar. All tho acceptors went to the post for the Hurdles, ami tho public .anticipated the result very cofvcctly, for l.ho first two fuvourites paid the dividends. At tho start Glenoroby, Wirokino, aud Parewiinui were out m front, but going down the back Gladful and the last-named were out by themselves, with the favourite m the middle of the field. . Paiewanui led round the home bend, where the favourite was being hustled, but ho stuck to his work, and caught the first day's "ivin'uer in the straight, and won by a couple ot lengths. Sensitive -was third, but, his rider failed to draw the weight, aud Gladful was placed third. There wero seven runners in the Stonyhurst Welter Handicap, aud with, the Autumn Handicap running lo guide them, backers made Zetes a good favourite. Iho Hawora horse ran a good, honest race, but Hushabyc was always with him, aud ovtr tho last half furlong worried him out of it. The official verdict was a head, with Sea Lord a half length"away, with Calais alongside him. Seddul-Bahr raced badly, but Join gave a fair .showing. Bin*' Lupin, Interlude, Aurore, Martlet, aud Royal Chef were preferred in that order for the Cloverlea-Hack Handicap, lor which Penniless was the only withdriiwa . The horses named and Con wcTe the fading division when tho field settled down, with. Eing Lupin and Royal Chel slightly ahead. Entering. the straight, Martlet 'became prominent,: and then Aurore shot up on the outside, but in a good hmsU Interlude got through in tho centre, and won all out by a neck. Ring Lupin was a head away, and then camo Royal Chef and Martlet. To tho general surprise, Royal Chef seemed to have more paco than Ring Lupin, but the latter, is useful, and will always pay his way at country meetings in the north. Auroro was slow to bcin, and should do better later om Desert Gold is still unbeatable, today she annexed the 12th Maiiawatu Stakes, after being led to the turn by the Highden pair. Once in the straight tho favourite was pulled out, and then in a lew strides she quickly placed the issue beyond all- doubt. At the -start Sweet Tipperary went out, but was at once joined by Ceasefire, with the favourite- aud Nys'tad uext. Tho Highden pair, together, were first into the straight, but once the favourite got a run the race was soon over. Hyttus.got badly off, but finished full of. running, and got second 'place. thus bearing out the Sires' Produce SSakes form. Nystad did considerably better to-day, and is tho better of the Highden pair. On returning to scale the winner was loudly applauded. It was the general opinion that' the champion put up one of bei" best performances in winning to-dayl ' , , . Cello and Harbour Light were baekeu in that order for tho Hack 'Welter Handicap. and after a hcad-and-hoad finish with Spain and Black Ada, S. Reid shoved Harbour Light first past the post. Detroit, who races in tho colours, of Mr. L. G. Jl'Donald, was out in front to tho disttuice, where Harbour Light and Cello camo on the scene. Tho latter failed to see it out, and -Spain', on the outside aud Black Ada. on the fence, tackled Harbour Light. The trio; were doing" their best passing the post, and heads only separated them". Detroit, Cello, aud Amity finished in that order.
The Longburn Handicap.was a,fine race all the way.. Tho favourites were Montana, Orleans, MJoujfu, Adjutant, and Square Deal in that order; and all shaped well. From a.good start Dribblo took charge, and;, led a bunchod (field ft the five furlongs, where Adjutant and Square Deal look charge just, clear of Montana, Want, and Bertraaa. Adjutant faded at tho-distance, where Orleans rushed up on the outside, but could not, sustain his run. Square Deal] was in charge after this, but Want tackled him ;rcsolutely and' the pair, ridden-right out,' Square Deal wan by a head. JLoulu wna a length away, and then came Multiply, Orleans, and Dribble. After the raco Mr. D. Frasor donated JioO to the Patriotic Fund.
Revalenfa wa6 a good favourite in th« Hack Flying Handicap, but she saddled up badly, and it was no surprise to find her failing badly. The Auckland-owned Toro Tore, made the running till well down the straight, when , Martial Air took charge and won by a length' from a rank outsider' in Nomur. Toro Toro was..'close up. - " -'
Orleans and Hushabyo, who had raced earlier in the day, .were withdrawn .from the Borough Handicap, as was Hydrus. The top-weight, Chortle, was a good favourite, and after a ding-dong finish with Battle .Eve, he won by a nose. Halins and Sea Lord made the running into the straight, where the favourite ran through on the fence, but Battle Eye challenged on the .outside, and,it was only S. Eeid's horsemanship that sav<>d the situation for the favourite's' supporters. THE RESULTS. By Teles:. .' •■ . , Palmorston N., April 13. KAIRANGA HURDLES. Ono mile and . a half. 1 Tararu Jack, lOst.
