; _4— — THEIR. EXCELLENCIES' BEREAVEMENT. 'At the welcome to the returned soldiers' yesterday the Prime Minister (the Rt. Hon. W. F. Massey) took occasion to refer to the bereavement suffered by Their Excellencies Lord and Lady Liverpool, in the. death of His Excellency's 'brother, Captain Foljambe, killed in action. _ • Mr. Massey said he wished to express the sympathy which he was sure all the people of New Zealand felt with Their Excellencies Lord and Lady Liverpool in their sorrow for the death of His Excellency's brother, who_ had died fighting for his King and his country. Since Their Excellencies had been in New Zealand they .had associated themselves with the life of the community, and they had taken the lead in everything tending to assist New Zealand to do its full share in the great war. They had shared in our sorrows and in our joys, and now they held not only the resoect, hut the affection of the people of Now Zealand. Consequently, in expressing sympathy, ho was uttering no mere form of words, hut the sincere sentiments of the people of New Zealand. The Mayor,also spolec a few words. He said that he had by letter tendered to Their Excellencies the sympathy of . the people of Wellington, and he had - received an acknowledgement of that i letter.
