EAST COAST RAILWAY
WHY WORKS ARE STOPPED
Adverse comments oil the action of the Minister'of Public Works in stopping construction work on a- suction of the East Ooast railway were made recently by the Auckland "Herald." The Minister yesterday, in reply to a question on the subject, made the following statement to a Dominion reporter: "The accuracy of the statements of the Auckland "Herald," concerning my alleged neglect of the important East Coast railway, will be nest gauged when' the Public Works Statement has been' delivered. The temporary cessation of work on the Gisborne-Wairoa line beyond Ngatapa has been' cited rs proof of this neglect. I may as well state that, owing to the extra large number of men. engaged on this section during last winter, the expenditure on the said section exceeded the vote on the Esti-, mates by about-£] 5,000, so it was high , time a' temporary halt was called,"
