FATAL ACCIDENT AT WAINGAWA By Telegraph — (Special Correspondent.) Mastehon, April 12. A shocking accident occurred at Waingawa Freezing Works, about fouj miles from Masterton, shortly before three o'clock this afternoon. A number of bricklayers had jusl completed the erection of a- new bricli wall, and had removed a portion of tlx scaffolding, when a- heavy gust of wine toro down the parapet. This struck tilt remaining portion of the scaffolding which crashed' against : the wall, and caused it to collapse. The bricks canic tumbling down on top of the men, whe were thrown in all directions. Two wcrt buried in tho debris, and four others wero more or less injured. Willing workers wero/soon engaged in rem>/mgi tho debris, and in a short while liberated tho buried men. One, named James Wood (married), about 32 years of ago, and a resident of Carterton, sustained frightful injuries to the abdomen and head, and died while being removed to the hospital. Another, named Gus Metis, suffered fracture of the ribs and scalp wounds, and was admitted to, the hospital. W. B.utherfurd sustained sovere scalp wowds and abrasions, and was also sent to tlio hospital. Three others, named George Charlesworth, W. T. Pretty, and Stanley Merewood, wore also injured, but not seriously. A number of men had narrow escapes, and it is considered little short of marvellous that more lives were not lost. One man jumped from the scaffolding on to another part of the building as the wall collapscd, and escaped l uninjured.. t. MOTORING ACCIDENT. By Telegraph.—(Special Correspondent Masterton, April 12. A man named John Culotty, a tc sident of Masterton, was driving ;n a motor-car this ovening between F.ketahuna and. Mangamahoe, with a party of ladies, when the car capsized over an embankment. Culotty sustained a compound fracture of the leg, but tho ladies escaped. '
