MANAWATU MEETING
GOLD OUP WON BY DESERT GOLD,
By Telegraph.—(Special Correspondent.)
Palmerston North. April 13. • ' The Manawatu llacing Club Autumn •Meeting opened in dull weather. There . was a substantial'falling oil in tho totalisator reiuriis, tno ligui-es being -619,731, against iast year. ■
. Proceedings opened with a 6urpriso when the little laucifd Parowanui;'succeeded in downing the. iwo shortcst-priced orders in Tararu Jack and Sleight of Hand. The , winner was lucky, and hotter handled both the placed horses would havo aefeated him. Tararu Jack was kept too ■ fur out ot it in the tlrst mile, and bleigh-t of Hand, who is a very promising jumper, covoi-ed a lot of extra ground. Glenorcny was promme'nt for-a time, but ho. waa • only fourth as tliey passed the post. , Aruake and Master Strowan both ran badly, and Hopje was tailed off the whole . way. Thu winner .was in front practically the whole way. A very poor lot contested tho Maiden Plato, and they were so even that tliero waft' little difference in the machine numbers. The imported horse, Crown Imperwl li, was the outsider.of the field, and tho favourite, was Tinkler, who 6Wrcd after Lady Kilworth. had made the running till well down the .straight. Insido the distance Henri Clay, Quinn's Poet, and /Tinkler became prominent, and the fav- ' ourite, finishing on. the best, won by a length, < - -' - • , - Adjutant was always favourite in the bis; handioap, and he won after a.good finish over the, final furlong, with Square Deal, who caught him,' but ' could not beat him.- Zetes led-Byron, Bertrada, and Mandoline out of the straight,-and down the back, but racing to. the home turn Adjutant took command. He was joined bf Square iDeal at tho -distance, but the . Chbkebore eolt .finished 011 the best, and won'by a length. Moulu was just clear of Bertrada and Byron. ITie-jmblic an--1 ticipated the placings very-'we'll, as. tho horsea were' backed in -i the order ' they finished.! The race was run at ■■ a . fast pace all, the way, with- the result ■ that anything that failed to jump out cleanly had no chance. .
A considerable delay took-place at tho fitart of , the Sires' Produce Stakes', Wing to the fractiousness of PSEruchio, Hyttus, and Nystad. When tho tepee were r&. leased the last named.and the Chokebort) pair were badly left, and Hyttus, Bjornooorg, and Menelaiis raced down tho baok , dear of' Sasanof and Egypt. Round the bend Hyttus went out and led into the straight from Egypt, Th'estius, and : tha Cliokebore pair. Sasanof then appeared on the Tails, and in' a good" Unish he accounted for Thestius, but could hot reach Hyttus. . .Then camo The Toff, who got a , run down the back, Bjornobora, and_ Egypt.. c The latter, stripped ok. the burly side, and will be much improved for the Both Wrestler and Petru. cliio showed great pace, and when "more seasoned will be useful stake earners. The winner stripped, well, and won on his merits...He looks lilce being the best two. year-old of the year, tot requires the ser. vices of a strong rider.- Nystad' showed none_ of the paoe he-is known to poiesa "fid it, is probable he will be gelded-at the close of,-'the Eat season. "' , . An outsider m Pomcroy won the'Linton Hack Welter: Handicap, after a great finish between Analogue, : Toki, and .Harbour Light, who crossed the line Wlth.only- heads separating them. Naiirar Maid o Gowrie made- the running to the straight entrance, with'.'Cello pull, lag hard just behind them. - At the dietaijco- the field bcnched, and a great went ,to Pomeroy, who surprised - everybody by the resolute :manner inwhich; he finished;, Toki'.was a- bit' .unhaving to: go round; the field, and _ Cello, the favourite, was beaten by the distance." Spain got a very bad run onrt seeme. no good" In-a field. .. : ' Tho Awapuni' Gold - Cup was a failure as far as the club;w;«s "concerned, as, out of • tli6- ton nominations, only oiig owner was found willing to start against the favourite .Desert Gold.': * This" was 'Mr. ; G. L. Stead, who sent out Wishful.; The race was-.responsible for several records. First.of all, tho-investments-on tho ma. chine were considerably, under a hundred; or less than has ever been invested on a race at Awapuni previously. Then again, of the , winner lost money on the transaction, which 'is also a-record: for the Manawatu'Club. Desert Gold' was always in front in the race, &n<i won in hollow style, ? . On. J return-bird-cage she' was received with cheers, while: Wishful was also ap. plauded. .
A very, big field contested the Woodhey Hack .Handicap, and several of the run. ners ; were .heavily ; suppoTted. A good start was effected, and the first to show out was Golden Grafton and Royal Chef, but at the end of a couple of -.furlongs Rin» Lupin was-in charge, and he led Gol,den Grafton 1 into the-straight. At the. distance Ticino,: Heel Tap, and Mart. 'let were prominent behind the' Auck. lander; .Heel Tap, on the fence,'and Gang Awa', on the outside," fought out a good finish, the Fordell horse winning by a head. Revalenta, who came from good way back, was third, and then .came Martlet,-Ring Lupin,- and Ticino. Royal Chef, and Ring Lupin will'both do batter next outing.-Tete-a-Tete, Watchful, Lady Louisa, Black Lupin, and Mahzoltov were withdrawn from the Telegraph Handicap, and the three top weights were heavily supported. ' Jean Laddo . and Veto were in front to the turn for home, when Multiplication put in some telling work, and won easily from' Veto, with Jean Laddo next, i: ; THE RESULTSj .-.By Telegraph--Prets; Association., KAREREHURDLES, Ono - mile - and -'three-quarters. , 7 I'arewanui, lOst. 21b. 1 1 Tararu Jack, 9st. 13lb a 2..Sleightof Hand, 9st. 21b. 3 Also started: 3 Aruake, lOst. 131b.; 2 Glenorchy, lOst. lllb.; 8.
