It Tias often been said that the habitual London clubman is among the most conservative of Englishmen, and this characteristic is more clearly marked if he chances to be a member of any of the old-established and more exclusive clubs. To men of this type tho innovations in the domestic service of the clubs caused by the exigencies of "the war must be lmrd. to bear. There is not, we'aro told, a. first-class club in London where women workers have not 'taken the place of men, and in many cases women have entirely renlaced men in attending to tho orders of members, and also in serving and waiting at table. At tho Athenaeum Club, London, which is described as the most Austere and exclusive institution of tho kind, the experiment of women attendants was at first carried out on a small and tentative scale, but it has einco been extended, with entire satisfaction to the members. At the Carlton, the Garrick, tho. Junior Constitutional, and other equally well-known clubs, it has been shown tliat the emplovment. of women as waitresses, and old and partly disabled soldiers for other' work, is becoming a hard and fast rule to which no exception is taken. Even in Melbourne, where the shortage of men Is not felt so acutely, at least one club has come into line.i and has followed the example set in London.

Some time ago an extract from a letter written to a relative in Wellington by Mrs. Shore-Nye, "The Chalet," Holmsgrove Road, Henleigh, Bristol, in which she said how greatly the NonZealand soldiers stationed in the South Bath Military longed for New Zealand weeklies and newspapers, was published in The Dominion. In response to her appeal, Mrs. Shore-Nye, in a recent letter, , states that newspapers and weeklies have been streaming in, and if their senders could see the great delight witli which tliey have been received by the men they would be perfectly certain to keep the supply going. Quite a number of New Zea'-/, landers are in hospital there,' ami although they are cheerful ami well looked after, news from the Dominion is always longed for.
