HELPING THE SOLDIERS

PROVIDING COMFORTS. For some months past -tho Misses Veitch (3), daughters of Councillor A. Veitch, assisted by Miss Muir, daughter of Mr. William Muir, have been engaged in an entirely praiseworthy work, tho object of which has been to provide fluids to purchase comforts for tlie wounded soldiers in Egypt. Tins money they linvo raised by manufacturing home-made sweets and selling them amongst their friends. By this means they have been able to forward to Lieut.-Colonel A. B. Charters; November 19, £10; December 16, £10; Christmas, £5; January 10, £20; February 26, £10; and there is now £13 in hand.' Writing'on February 2to Miss Veitch, Lieut.-Colonel■ Charters says: "Since •writing'you a few weeks ago, the 6iim of £10 has come to me through the paymaster. I expended the amount hi anticipation of receiving it, on plum puddings for the boys. . After a long bout in the trenches I find there is nothing which appeals to them more than duff, more particularly as most of them spent their Christmas Day either at 'Mudros or on; a trump steamer en route to Egypt, the chief articles of diet, being tinned beef and biscuits. The men liavc enjoyed the ; puddings immensely, and although, as is customary with soldiers, they do not say much about it, yet I do know that they appreciate it ..-very much indeed. I want to thank you, on my behalf, and very, sincerely ( everyono wlio has had a sharein so kindly affording us the opportunity of adding to the .comfort of our men. 1 have just left the Base Depot, - consequently, if you are expecting to send'anything >further, it would be better to. have it made payable to Colonel J. J. Esson, Commandant Headquarters, New Zealand Expeditionary Force in Egypt, Cairo. Colonel Esson-is from Wellington, and is a particularly fine man in every sense of the -word. He will.see that any money is spent-to the'i best advantage, and will always acknowledge the receipt."
