CRATER AND TRENCH TAKEN AT ST. ELOI
EBB AND FLOW AT VERDUN '
COSTLY ATTACKS BY THE GERMANS
PENDING BLOW IN
THE BALKANS
BIG EVENTS EXPECTED
MR. ASQUITH'S RETORT TO HUN. CHANCELLOR !
The'great struggle'at Verdun shows no sign of decreasing in intensity, and the ebb and flow of minor engagements—as distinguished from the main offensive—show here a French score; and there a Ger- ! man. The British have delivered a successful attack at St. Elpi, as the result of which they have secured possessipu of a mine-crater
and-a German trench. Big ■events-are expected in Salonika within
the next fortnight, to judge from the reports of Austro-German pre- * parations. The' British campaign in Mesopotamia is proceeding under great, disadvantages as regards floods, and an attack which was initiated by General Gorringe at Sunnaiyat has failed to penetrate the , Turkish lines. There are no material developments elsewhere. • Mr. Asquith has.delivered a crushing reply to the German Chancellor's recent bombast. ■ '"••.-
