HUTT BOROUGH COUNCIL

There were present at last evening's .meeting of the Hutt Borough Council the Mayor (Mr. H. Baldwin) and Councillors Hodgins, Meldnmi, Carver, Brnssel, Clendou. M'Dougall, Heron, Ball, and Hobbs. , A complaint was considered in respect ti the practice of driving horses through the streets after dark, and it was agreed to refer the matter to the Bylaws Committee to draft a by-law to deal with the subject. The Petone Council appoved of the terms proposed in connection with drain connections in Wakefield Street. The council decided to charge extra where there was an increases and to refund ill the event of a decrease. The Borough Solicitor advised the council to appeal against the Magistrate's' decision in reference to the case of L. 01oake'6 licensing case under the heavy traffic by-laws. -The Mayor stated that acting upon this advice he had lodged an appeal, and the council approved of the action. . j ' The council decided ro facilitate the attendance of|tho borough engineer (Mr. J. Roche) at the annual meeting of the New Zealand Society of Civil Engineers, but decided that no expenses could be allowed. .The engineer's report stated that at White's Lino a sump had been installed, and that tho council's cottage had been renovated completely. Two connections had been made with tho gas mains, one with tho water, and threo with the sewerage, making the total to date 55C, \ 1013, and 91.9 respectively The report | was adopted. The Fire Brigade Committee report- [ ed that the brigade motor worked badly when attempting to reach a firo on March ■ fl B It was found that a plug of cotton ■ waste had apparently been inserted by '' some person in the petrol tube,-close to ' the filter. The committee decided to notify the police and lo offer a reward J of £5 for information that would lead lo the conviction of the offender; also > that unauthorised persons found tres- - passing in the Firo Station should bo prosecuted. The roport was adopted.
