ANOTHER FINE GIFT
MARAETAI LAND SHAKES AGAIN
Encouraged by the splendid ■ showing made by the Wellington Patriotic Society in raffling the 4000 shares in the Maraetai Land Company (of Hamilton), presented by Mr. John M'Master, of Pirinoa, Wairarapa,. Mr. A. T. Bate, the well-known land and estate agent of Wellington, has donated 500 shares in the samo land company to be raffled for patriotic purposes. It has not yet been decided as to tho manner in which the, raffle will be presented to the public. ' Up till yesterday morning the sum of £12,911 had been received l in connection with the M'Master raffle, and money is still being received daily. The- point as to which organisation is to have tho administration of this sum has yet to be decided. The Patriotic Society may move in the direction of having its constitution altered in order to allow of it administering the money on lines to he definitely defined. On the other hand, thcro may bo those of opinion that there should only bo one spending body—tho War Relief Association. As the matter now stands, there are three bodies spending money on soldiers—tho War Belief Association (which inquires into the cases of all returned soldiers in need or the circumstances of dependents left behind by those who have ..gone forward), the Mayor's Committee (which buys fruit, games, and comforts for .departing soldiers and those in camp), and the Patriotic Society, which' has on occasions supplied binoculafs and periscopes to departing officers out of funds specially raised for that purpose. Thoro will be a meeting of the society on Thursday evening to discuss this question.
