Tho German Admiralty is rapidly constructing submarines that can keep closer to the surface than the usual type, because the periscope has been abolished and lens and mirrors built in the hull on both sides to enable observations to' ba taken. A steward uho was amongst the survivors of the torpedoed steamer Zent (sunk by a submarine last week), relates that the vessel .was torpedoed at 10 p.m., the explosion killing many of the stokers. The lifeboats were quickly lowered, and the crew jumped in. Unfortunately they were unalile'to shove off quickly enough, and as tho ship turned over hw masts came orashing down upon the boats, two of which

were overturned,, several of the occupants being killed. The entire crew of one boat was lost. Those who were saved held on to the keel of an upturned boat for several hours untilrescued. The Zont, which was' torpedoed without warning, sank in two minutes.
