TRENTHAM RACES
CONCLUDED IN RAIN ELIGIBLE WINS GOLD CUE ADJUTANT AHEAD IN THE HANDICAP I,ocal racegoers took tho weather upon trust on Saturday morning, and the early trains leaving for Trontham were well filled. Tho rain hold oil just about lons enough lo ensure the success of tho Wellington Itaciug Club's Autumn Meeting. Before the first lieavy shower fell about midday an average crowd had assembled, and the cold, bleak conditions which followed, did not have any very serious effect on speculation. Tiie tofcalisator investments during the aftornoon amounted to and although this was not equal to last year's second day figures, tho aggregate for the meeting (ii 71,390) was not far short of last year's aggregate. (.era,oo9). - His Excellency the Governor (tho.Earl of Liverpool) and party were, present, and after the race for tho Trentham Gold Cup, His Excellency presented the handsome trophy, which Mr; W. G. Stead had won with tlio aid of tho threc-yoar-oM Eligible. The winner was led on to tha lawn for the ceremony. The sport was of an interesting character, and while tho (joins was h«aner than on the opening day the rain had not made the track treacherous or sodden, as the times for the races will show. On the lawn, the club did what it oouid , for the comfort of patrons by spreading . 'straw freely on the gross. - . . .For the epening ..event yiaditui was a good favourite, and he easily justified th® i rcipiiort, for after being tailed off in. the ! first part, he came on well from the baitj mile, and was a winner a furlong from 1 home. He hangs in badly, and interfered ! with Harbour Light, but it made no aii* ference to the result of the race. Parawanui, Queen's Post, and Hurakia led to gether for a mile, when HarbouT Light! took charge, but in the straight the fay* ourite triumphed easily. Considering his backward condition Hurakia did will be a factor'to be reckoned with, m iumping events ahead. The betting was well distributed in the Hutt Handicap which resulted ma rather easy victory for the Karamu fill? Hy»ia, while there was a great finish foe second place between. Tanngamutu, Want. Ogier and Rumania. The two ac< fcual favourite, Chillies and Wishful, • both ran badly, and the former does not seem to be a second-day horse. Limpet made the early running, but entering the straight Ogier ran past the leaders, wliilo Eumania, on the outside, also became prominent. At the distance Hygia took charge on the outside and won full of running. The Karamu filly. had tne minimum impost, but she finished on well, suggesting that a good handicap should not be above her. .' Heeltap scored in the Muntai Handw cap with a very pronounced run. Ha jumped out first from the barrier, but was steadied and Martial Air, Franbonnet, and Revalenta took up the running and led into the straight. Then Cleft appeared in front, with Martial Air. but over the last hit Heeltap came out and won well, while Seadown just cut Clefs , Dut ot second money. Toki and Martial Air were the next to finish. The threo placed horses were the best backed on, the machine. All the acceptors went to the post for the Autumn Handicap, which was run. in . a shower of rain. The. early running iras made )>r Adjutant, Moulu, Marsinah and Pursefilier in that order. Down tha back Moulu led from Pursefilier ana Montana moved up into third place, while Multiply was in tho rear with' Blackall. At the straight entrance Bed Ribbon had taken charge with Montana handy, but Adjutant came fast on tha outside and won by. a length. Montana, beat. Bed Ribbon in the last stride, and then came Sir Solo. Multiply, Moulu and Blackall in that order. The betting in this event was very even, five of the runners coming in for heavy support. The winner did not get a good passage and his performance was a good one. Ha has a 101b. penalty jn the big handicap at Awapuni, but with this may. start favourite. \ ■ ■•. Cease Fire and Hyllus were the best backed on the machine for the Pacifia Handicap, and the former won nicely from Bjorneborg, with Hyllus in third place just clear of Menelaus. Hyllus, Menelaus, and Koesian were in front at ; the course proper, but Cease Fire then took charge, and going well in tho mnd, he easily stalled off a lato run bv Bjorneborg, while Hyllus, who got a bad run in the middle of the race, was finishing on in third place. Menelaus, thq fourth horse, tired badly over the last furlong, Potruchio, who has somewhat of a reputation, jumped back when tha barrier rose and was left at the post. Tho Gold Cup was the one-horse raca anticipated and the three-year-old went to the. front at■>barrier rise and won all the way. At the entrance Balboa attempted to get on terms, but a re. minder from Reed made Eligible go on and he won, doing his best, by three lengths.. Balboa was twice .this distance in front of Indigo. The betting in the Suburban Handicap revealed several surprises, and the horses who had run prominently on the first clay were neglected on the machine. Evidently the going,'was expected to make a .considerable difference. Astor and Hy. ginas, the two favourites, were promineut at the bottom of the straight, but Battle Evo swept up on the outside, and won nicely by a length. Hyginas just beat Astor, while Sea Lord was fourth, and Sweet Corn, the first day's winner, was the last to pass the post, thus completely upsetting the first day's form. The last race was another big betting race, and of the dozen starters threo o£ them carried over four figures. Ohiwai, Tango, and King Lupin were the favourites in, the order named, and tho first] named won decisively by a couple ol lengths, while Lady Black "beat with Tango in fo"urth place. RESULTJ.
