He won his V.C. at Game Tree in December,, . 1899, during the Boer War, when he was three times wounded. His left arm had to be amputated. .He was recommended for distinction by Major, now Sir, Ales. Godley. The lieutenant also saw service in the Matabele campaign and the Natal native rebellion. Mr. Ashmeacl Bartlett, war correspondent, is due to arrive from Sydney this morning. He will be tlie guest of the New Zealand Club on Tuesday, and will be entertained by local journalists 011 Wednesday. ' , ~ Mr. J. H.. C. Bond, general traffic manager of the Union Company, arrived in AVellington by the Mararoa from Lytteltori on Saturday morning. Mr. and Mrs. A. Kaye, of Christchurch, are leaving on a trip to England nest week...'. . At the sitting of tbe. Canterbury Land Board on Thursday, the senior member, Sir. .T. Sealy, said that before commencing the duties of the clay he took much pleasure,' in the name of the board, in welcoming Mr. Skinner to the position of Commissioner of Lands for the district. The district was one of the finest in New Zealand, ithere . .was no doubt, but lie reminded Mr. Skinner that they had been lately passing - through bad times. The crops ' bad not been too good, although in sofne places they had been exceedingly good, but on the whole, the new Commissioner had come to preside in a very favoured district. The gentleman who had just vacated the nosition had been a very good man ijideed, and Mr. Skinner would have difficulty in following in the footsteps of such an excellent officer as Mr. Pollen had been! He had no'doubt the board would extend to Mr. Skinner tho' same assistance and advico that it had given Mr. Pollen in the past. E. 'Cliisholm, District lelegraph Engineer of the combined districts of Otago and Canterbury, Canterbury will again be constituted a ■ separate telegraph district. Mr. C. S. Plank, assistant engineer, Christchurch, has been appointed to take charge, while Mr. A. Gibbs, staff engineer, Wellington, will take charge of the Otago district.
