MAGISTRATE'S COURT
ALLEGED BIGAMY Mr. D. G. A. Cooper, S.M., presided over a sitting of the Magistrate's Court yesterday, and dealt with the following, cases: — Wilfred Gregor Gibson M'Kinnon, of Otald, and now a member of tho Reinforcements, appeared on a charge of committing bigamy. In outlining the case. Inspector Hendrey said that accused, being already married to Ada Blanch Meldrum, went through a form of marriage with Riona Te Aliau Holiipuka, a Maori girl, on March 31, • 1915. On the application of Inspector Hendrey a remand was granted till Friday next. Bail amounting to £200 was granted. A MAINTENANCE CASE. A young, well-proportioned man, named Albert Edward Horsefield, who, according to his own statement, was in receipt of 9s. per day, was charged with having failed to provide for his two children, who are under tho ago of 16 .years. In giving evidence, his wife stated that he had not helped to support the family for nearly three years. His Worship made an order against Horsefield for the payment of 7s. 6d. per week in respect of each child. In order to make_ up arrears (£25), the accused .was instructed to pay a further 10s.per week, and report himself to the police at stated intervals. THEFT CHARGE DISMISSED. Joseph Wilding Smith appeared, charged with the theft of furniture, valued at £10, the property of Mary Ann Stent. The case for theproseoution was to the. effect that while Mrs. Stent, was away from her home, Smith, who had been living in the house with her, sold the furniture to at least two people. Mr. O'Leary, who appeared for the defendant, denied tho charge, and said that his client had, under instructions from the woman,' got rid of certain articles of furniture. After hearing evidence, His Worship decided to dismiss tho information. TERRITORIAL FINED. 'Arthur Leonard Albertson, for failing to attend drill, was fined 205., with costs 75., in default to undergo three days' detention. POLICE GASES. Five first inebriates were dealt with, in tlie usual manner. May Gibbons, an old offender, was fined 205., the alternative being seven days' imprisonment. For using indecent language in Ghuznee Street, Rebecca Olive Findlay was fined £3. In default she ordered to undergo one month's imprisonment.
A charge of ill-treating a horse, preferred against Alfred Brown and William Hawker, was dismissed.
For not being able to satisfactorily account for having a ham, valued at 155., in his possession, a young man named George William Dinester was finod 205., default being fixed.at seven days'' imprisonment. William Jensen and David Patterson, charged with tlie theft of four bottles of whisky, valued at £1 65., were again remanded, and bail was fixed as previously. ' ' A- young soldier named Richard Henry Smith' was ' charged with • having used indecent language in a railway carriage between Wellington and Trentliam. After hearing evidence, His Worship said that on account of Smith having served his King and country and returned and rejoiued the forces again, he would be convicted and ordered to come up for sentence when called upon. 1 William Thomas pleaded guilty to having taken 4s. belonging to James Bowman Mowbray. He was fined 205., the alternative being seven days' imprisonment. BY-LAW CASES. Before Mr. D. G. A. Cooper, S.M.,' in the Magistrate's Court yesterday, the following by-law cases were heard■ For failing to carry a head-light on a motor-car, Thomas Gray was fined ; 10s., with 7s. costs, while in * respect of a charge of failing to carry a taillight, Michael Kearney was penalised in tho sum of 55., ; with 7s. costs. A. Davis, who obstructed the traffic by leaving a lorry in Willis Street, was fined 10s., with 7s. costs. William Roberts was similarly dealt with for. riding a bicycle without a light. William Tremain, who had driven an express without lights, was also fined 10s.;' with 7s. costs, and for leaving his vehicle unattended he was fined 55., and 7s. costs. For allowing his horse to wander, Ernest Hadley was fined 55., costs 7s. How Lee and Yee Cliong Wong, charged with allowing offensive matter to'accumulate oil their premises,.' were convicted and discharged. William Petherin, who was licit! responsible for impeding the traffic in Manners Street, was fined 205., 'with 13s. costs. For removing shingle from the Island Bay Esplanade, Walter.Andrew Hodley was fined 10s., with costs lis. Two breaches ■of drainage by-laws wero alleged against Richard Duffy, and. he was mulcted in penalties amounting to £1 55., with 3 6s. costs. For having unregistered dogs in their possession, W. M. Dorr, •T. Anderson, C. A. Fletcher, and J. C. Hallidaytwere convicted.
Ellis Harper, for having no light on his motor-cycle, and also for leaving the machine unattended, was fined 10s. On seven .other similar charges, ho was oouvicted and discharged.
