POOR MILK
PLTjNKET SOCIETY'S TROUBLES. Half a dozen ladies, representing tlio Plunket Society, waited on thn City Council last evening in reference to tlio i council's energetic action in connection with the City's milk supply. Mrs M'Vicar, as spokeswoman, said tliat the matter had been mentioned at their monthly meeting that afternoon, and she wished : to stato the difficulties they had experienced with the supply, despite all their efforts to rectify it, and how very pleased they were to 6CO that tho council was taking up the matter The society had three nurses, and every month it was the same story—the milk ft was so bad that they had to keep the babies on artificial food. To show the extent of their work, they had dealt with no fewer than 425 cases in their Courtenay Place rooms during March, apart altogether from the visits paid by the nurses to private, homes. Councillor ?. Fuller asked whqthei the conditions were as bad in tho winter as in tho summer. Mrs. M'Vicar was understood to say that the position was bad al] the year, but particularly had in January, February, and March, but there wero difficulties in the winter owing to tho shortage. Mrs. M'Vicar said that the milk wna so bad that they could do nothing with it at the Children's Hospital, where thev had to put the children on artificial food. ~ , , The Mayor : ssid that the council had determined that they were not going to rest in the matter, firstly on account of the importance of 'pure milk to infant: life, and secondly to adults, and ho conveyed the appreciation of the council to the society for its interest in the matter.
