Trentham orders state: "N.C.O.'s must be clearly given to understand that 1 the examination for appointment to 2nd ~ lieutenant is a qualifying one, and that a. passing the examination, even with good 0 marks, _ does not necessarily result in promotion to a. commission. The most s important qualification for promotion is • ability to command men. The examina- • tion is merely a test of other qualifications." "It covers married men who have been honourably discharged since that date. Also the. step-children of soldiors. The allowance will be paid to guardians of motherless'children. "Like the married allowance, it is not payable beyond New Zealand except to wives and children domiciled' in New Zealand, but temporarily absent therefrom. The Camp Adjutant at Trentham; Captain E. 0. Dovey, has completed the drawing up of a list of events to be included in the programme at the big sports mooting arranged for Good Friday. The events include a quarter-mils race, mile race, mile walk, obstacle race, tilting the bucket, platoon race, bandsmen's race, wheelbarrow race, sack race, ration orderlies' race, potato race, rifle exercises, -elay race, alarm race, harem race, threading needle race, tent pitching and striking, buglo competition,' tug-of-war, physical drill ' competitions, and other contests.
