" ''The return.' ot the men registered for the loth Reinforcements , in the Auckland district shows an oxcess of 199 enlistments in the other ■ branches of the service, and in the Wellington district an excess of 590 enlistments in the other, branches. Of this largo number no fewer, than 351 are registered on the'books at the No. 5 Group Office, Wellington. It will thus be Been that there aro.morc than sufficient men registered in Wellington City for arms of the sorvice outside the infantry; to make good the combined shortage for the Auckland and Wellington districts. I ask these men to stand by their fellow New Zealandors who have already achieved imperishable fame, and be prepared to do what their comrades- already in camp havo so cheerfully and willingly done, and offer their services .where they, are most needed. _ The need is urgerit. .If the enemy wins, democracy will be destroyed for generations to come, and a black shadow.thrown over the brightest spots of the world. I make an earnest, direct appeal to every man who is now registered in the'over-full branches of the service to rise to tho occasion and show- himself a man in deed.as well as in intention, and place his service freely and at once at the disposal of the Defence authorities. The - opportunity and the privilege' are still open to him, and to overy other eligible citizen of military age to voluntarily' join with the flower of the Dominion's manhood, and fare forth in this great and glorious adventure across the seas in defence of' the liberty of the individual against the ■ despotism of an unscrupulous and inhuman foe." WELLINGTON SLACKNESS | SIB JOSEPH WARD'S OPINION. : Sir v Joseph Ward/ gave it as his opinion last night that the shortage in tho Wellington' draft is. due to .the failure of the local organisation to adopt the Government scheme. . "Wellington .has done so well up to now," said Sir Joseph Ward, "that I think the present slackness is due to the_ fact that the new system of re-' cruiting has 'not been adopted here. There are evidences already that where it has been adopted and taken up actively by the local bodies and the others cooperating with them, the are very much hotter than they were before." RECRUITING IN THE SOUTH STATEMENT BY MR. iALLEN. By Telegraph—Press Association. ■'■■■,-' . Dunedin, April 6. Speaking at the'farewell to tho Otago Reinforcement to-day, the Hon. James Allen .congratulated the. Dunedin district on sending away four, men above the quota, though the complement for the . Otago district; is 51 short; : He recognised that the organisation, created in. accordance with the Governments scheme was producing a good effect in-the city; and he ventured to say Christchurch would produce, the same result, for' Christchureh was thoroughly' well organised. Ho looked to the South Island to show the North Island that by organisation and workit could produce regularly Reinforcements without shortage; the North Island/.would then follow the example of the South'' Island in bringing into force the organisation which had been devised, in the recruiting scheme-put before, tho, people by the Government and the Recruiting Board. • IOTAGO'S QUOTA.: ' 1: .: By Telegraph—Press Association. Dunedin, April 6. Tho Otago quota for the 15th 'Reinforcements left this morning. Dunelin supplied four men in excess ,of the lumber asked; but there is still ' a shortage of fifty-one for the Otago nilitary district. The Hon. J. Allen, Tho spoke at the civic farewell, appealed; fox'.this number, and for fifty-seven idditional. men to make up shortages. md wastages in previous Reinforcenents. ■•■ ' SMALL SHORTAGE ON WEST '.'/ COAST. Oamaru, April 6. w|Tli9'Sorth'v;pWgo-quota for the Fifkenth'"Reinforcements was enthusiastically farewelled to-day., The quota is fourteen short.. . ... The Town Hail Recruiting Committee will, hold a public 'meeting at th-Concert:-Chamber, on Monday eveninj ,next, for the purpose of making '.arrangements to conduct a personal canvass, to promote the enrolment oi eligible men for active 6orvioe.
